DigitalCinema – DVC extends with OnairForce HDTV applications

The digitalisation of Mediadata will also capture cinemas in the nearby future.

Even though the presentation of the major movie will be reserved for the 35mm film for some time, presentations of advertisment and filmlets will soon more frequently take place via projection of digital Media. HDTV (High Definition Television) can offer the picture quality postulated from the advertising industry. HDTV – originally developed for the broadcast market – could be revived in the cinema. The advantages with the digital handling in cinemas are an improved efficiency for cinema operators and a higher flexibility by ticketing and scheduling cinema advertisment. OnairForce e-Cinema, which is distributed and configured by DVC Digitalvideo Computing GmbH, will soon offer a modular product conception to realise flexible customer solutions. All applications, programs and tools of the OnairForce e-Cinema concept are working webbased. The application is structured into three parts:

1. Scheduling and organisation of content (Operation Content)

2. Transfer of Videodata via dataconductions or satellite (DVB Transfer/Storage)

3. Datastorage and Playout in the cinemas (HDTV Show)

All MPEG2-Videodata can be managed in a database configurable by the customer just like already being done in OnairForce Braodcast applications. The program works as webinterface on the basis of a SQL-database and therewith is administrable without any areal restriction. It is possible to import foreign files e.g. from national marketing agencies. Cinema locations are also managed in the database. For the accounting cinemas can be combined to free definable clusters. The transmission of promotion plans to cinemas can be done via e-mail. After encoding promotion spots (MPEG2 50 Mbit/sec) they will be stored as MPEG2-programstream or transportstream files on transfer servers. A transfermodule incurs the transmission of data to the playout-locations. The filesharing-concept provides the transmission alternatively in push- or pull-techniques. The ideal mode of transmission is chosen by available data connection where all broadband connections come into question. The data transmission is the great advantage of this procedure. Only data which is not yet available on the cinema server is being transmitted. Via cinema webdatabase the status of the data stock is recallable at all times. The whole system basically runs completely automated. The playout of promotion spots in the cinema takes place via the HDTV hardware. DVC Digitalvideo Computing GmbH offers different solutions. The participants were enthused with first presentations of DigitalCinema by the high picture- and sound-quality. A HiBOX3 came into operation during these presentations. It decodes MPEG2-transportstreams with 50 Mbit/sec and sents it to a beamer.
