Feature animation gets performance-obsessed

A new set of feature animation sessions puts character performance front and centre. Supervising Animator Adam Sarophim will present how performance-driven animation gets built at Sony Pictures Imageworks using work from KPop Demon Hunters and GOAT. The session description focuses on crafting emotion, personality, and audience connection through movement, timing, and subtle detail.

Animator Jacob Frey will present The Animation of Zoomania 2 and describe collaboration between art and technology as part of the filmmaking process at Walt Disney Animation Studios. The session description frames the work as an example of how tools and artistic intent meet inside a feature pipeline. Details about specific story beats, pipeline tooling, or shot counts are not specified in the Sources.

Two European-leaning projects also land on the slate: The Last Whale Singer (a teenage humpback whale named Vincent), and a procedural real-time pipeline segment called Trash Island. The speakers listed for that session are Jan Hofmann, a CG Supervisor and Unreal Engine expert at Telescope Animation, and Amir Ashkezari, an FX Supervisor and Technical Director at PFX. The pipeline description centers on Houdini generated assets moving via OpenUSD into both real-time Unreal Engine and a traditional Autodesk 3ds Max and V-Ray workflow, connected by custom tools intended to support daily collaboration between studios in different locations.

Zako is a feature project based on a true story about an Armenian painter during World War II and the Soviet Union. Director Tigran Arakelyan of OnOff Studio will present how VR animation can serve as a core creative tool for sketching, staging, and animating directly in 3D space, as well as practical methods for integrating VR animation into a feature film production pipeline.

AI talks that aim past hype

The Artificial Intelligence track is around practical production use and the question of what AI should do in modern pipelines, with an emphasis on keeping a human artist in the loop.

Ben Grossman of Magnopus is listed for an individual session, followed by a panel appearance. Mohsen Mousavi, Senior Director of Visual Pioneering at Eyeline Studios, is also in an individual session and on the same panel. Hao Li, founder of Pinscreen, is about to present on work spanning computer vision and facial performance technology, having completed AI work on Fallout Season 2. The track is curated by Mike Seymour, co-founder of fxguide.

Cinematography goes deep into the lens mess

The Cinematography track highlights craft from stop-frame production through to photoreal VFX . Cinematographer Dave Alex Riddett will present Work Aard Play Aard, a behind-the-scenes look at decades of cinematography at Aardman and the practical skills involved in stop-frame storytelling.

VFX Supervisor Victor Perez will present GLASS: Capturing the Lens Look for Photorealistic VFX. The session description focuses on lenses having distinct optical characteristics including distortion, chromatic aberration, field curvature, vignetting, iris behavior, and micro-contrast, and on methods to analyze, measure, and reconstruct those characteristics inside VFX pipelines so CGI inherits the visual identity of the camera that shot the plate. The track is curated by Sara Coppola-Nicholson, Director of Research and Education at Cooke Optics.

Partners bring cloud and tools to the conversation

Two newly announced partners add their own angle on production infrastructure and creative tooling. AWS Visual Computing is about cloud-based solutions for visual effects, animation, and 3D content production, including scalable rendering, virtual workstations, and high-performance storage optimised for media workflows. It also highlights AWS Deadline Cloud as a fully managed render management service.

AI that cleans up after the creative decisions

There is a familiar moment in every edit: the story finally works, the pacing clicks, and then the timeline reveals the bill. Breaths to trim. Dead air to delete. Captions to build. Takes to compare. Chapters to mark. Shorts to slice. It is not glamorous, but it is where hours disappear.

AutoCut targets that stretch of the process with a set of automation tools that run directly in the host editor. The plugin bundles 10 distinct tools into a single subscription and runs in Premiere Pro versions from 2023 through 2026. It also supports DaVinci Resolve 18.6 and 19 or later, including the free version of Resolve.

The goal is simple: keep editors on the same Timeline and offload repetitive cleanup that does not need creative judgment, while leaving the actual choices in human hands. New tools and innovations should always be tested before use in production, especially when they touch timing, dialogue, and deliverables.

Silence cutting with knobs editors actually recognize

Silence removal sits at the centre of the toolset, and it is the feature on which the plugin originally built its name. The workflow starts with something editors already do every day: define an in point and an out point on the timeline. From there, the editor sets a noise floor value in dB and tunes the minimum silence duration and the minimum speech duration, then lets the analysis do the trimming.

For fast iteration, it also provides preset profiles ranging from Calm to Jumpy that adjust how aggressively gaps are removed. In practice, that means the editor can decide whether the cut should feel conversational or more like a caffeinated highlight reel, without manually razor-blading every pause.

This is the kind of automation that tends to fit high-volume talking-head work: solo presenters, interview-heavy pieces, video journalism, and anyone cutting long-form dialogue where micro-pauses add up to macro time loss. It is also relevant to podcast workflows, especially when the job includes preparing multiple versions of the same content for different platforms and runtimes.

About one third into a real-world edtiing day, silence trimming is usually where optimism goes to die. This is where automation earns its keep.

Captions, chapters, profanity, resizing, and the rest of the boring buffet

The plugin’s ten-tool bundle extends beyond silence cutting into other mechanical steps that commonly stack up after an edit locks. It includes animated captions and translation, along with tools aimed at podcast and short-form production.

The feature set also covers take selection via repetition detection, profanity bleeping (a f**** usefull feature depending on the topic… though we haven‘t tested it with the creative swearing that comes from an 8+ hour editing session…) , and chapter creation for long videos. There is also an aspect ratio conversion tool for resizing deliverables for different formats, which matters when a single cut needs to ship in multiple aspect ratios under the same deadline.

One module focuses on turning long videos into short-form clips by identifying key segments. Another uses AI to add B-rolls, with the B-roll feature listing Storyblocks as the stock footage source powering that portion of the workflow. These features sit squarely in the current reality of editorial: one master timeline often needs to feed a whole ecosystem of cutdowns, captions, and platform-specific versions.

The plugin includes a podcast module and a multicam podcast editing workflow, which targets a common pain point for creators and small teams: syncing the cameras is the easy part, but cleaning up the dead air, surfacing the best takes, and generating captions can turn a quick turnaround into a multi-hour grind.

Licenses, trials, and what it costs when the honeymoon ends

The plugin ships with a 14-day free trial that requires no credit card. After that, pricing splits into three plans, with monthly and annual billing options.

The Basic Plan unlocks only the silence-removal tool. It costs $6.60 per month when billed annually, listed as $79 per year, or $9.90 per month when billed monthly.

Where it fits in a modern post pipeline

The plugin’s appeal is not about replacing editorial decisions. It is about compressing the cleanup stage that follows those decisions. When you are cutting dialogue-driven content at volume, the work is not only creative but also procedural. The procedural part tends to be the same every time, making it a strong candidate for automation.

The best way to judge tools like this is to throw real timelines at them. Use a project with messy audio, uneven pacing, multiple cameras, and actual delivery requirements, then validate the output against your standards. If the tool saves time without introducing new cleanup, it earns a spot. If it creates edge-case errors, it stays in the sandbox until it behaves.

For those who don’t know the tool: Vegas Pro (formerly Sony Vegas) is a Windows-first nonlinear editor built for fast timeline cutting, finishing, and delivery, with tight audio tools, broad format support, and a workflow that stays nimble even when projects get messy.

Boris FX announced the acquisition of Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro from MAGIX Software GmbH. The deal folds a long-running Windows NLE and two established audio tools into the same product family as the company’s existing VFX, motion graphics, audio, and photo toolsets, and it also brings new AI technology into the organization.

The product development teams and engineers behind Vegas Pro, Sound Forge, and Acid Pro will come over with BorisFX, with teams based in Madison, Wisconsin, and Germany. And to get all that rolling, the Vegas Pro 2026 release is the first major update in this new setup, introducing new features across the lineup and signalling that more development and integration work is planned beyond this initial drop.

If you learned to cut on Vegas Pro (Sony Vegas, previously) back when the last millennium was still the current one, you are not alone. I first used Vegas Pro more than a quarter of a century ago, and my knees just filed a bug report about that fact.

Vegas Pro 2026 aims straight at speed, stability, and staying local

Vegas Pro is available in three editions: Vegas Pro, Vegas Pro Plus, and Vegas Pro Ultimate. The 2026 release introduces major new features across the lineup, with an explicit focus on workflow and stability. The core editing workflow adds advanced 2D and 3D titling options, support for NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs, a newly updated AI model, AI-driven transcription and voice generation tools, and support for the ProRes RAW format.

There is also a new integrated title package called the Continuum Title Pack, described as a collection of 2D and 3D motion graphics and titling tools from the Continuum toolset. It includes 70 drag-and-drop presets, and it is designed to let users design, extrude, deform, and animate titles and graphics without leaving Vegas Pro.

On the performance side, the Blackwell GPU support is positioned around accelerating playback, compositing, effects processing, and rendering, and it also calls out smoother handling for 4:2:2 footage by removing the need for software decoding for AVC or HEVC formats on supported systems. On the codec side, Vegas Pro 2026 adds native, Apple-certified ProRes RAW support on Windows, with RAW parameter control inside the application, including colour space, ISO, and white balance.

Depth masks, transcripts, and voiceover, without the cloud detour

The Enhanced Z-Depth Effect is an AI-based depth model trained by the in-house machine learning team, with the goal of more accurate, higher-resolution depth masks and improved foreground and background separation. It is aimed at practical compositing-style use, like placing text behind people or adjusting background treatment quickly.

Speech-to-Text is a fully offline voice-over transcription with no internet connection required, with support for over 100 languages, text-based editing, automatic subtitle creation, and unlimited transcriptions with multiple model options to balance quality and performance. This offline transcription feature is available exclusively with Vegas Pro subscriptions.

Text-to-Speech is also described as offline, creating voiceovers locally on a PC with no internet connection required. It supports 9 languages and 54 voices, allows unlimited voiceover lengths, and includes adjustable speed, pitch, and volume controls. It is also available exclusively with Vegas Pro subscriptions.

Subscriptions also include access to a Storyblocks media library inside Vegas Pro, offering royalty-free stock footage, music, and sound effects directly in the application.

Plus and Ultimate lean into effects and audio

Vegas Pro Plus includes everything in Vegas Pro and adds tracking and masking tools, motion graphics and particle effects, audio editing, and AI-driven audio cleanup. It includes Mocha Vegas planar tracking, described as a way to track surfaces and objects, create masks and roto shapes, stabilise footage, and apply tracked effects using the same planar tracking tech used in other products. It is integrated directly within Vegas Pro Plus. It also includes Particle Illusion Pro, a real-time GPU 2D and 3D particle engine with thousands of presets and customizable emitters, available as a plugin.

Vegas Pro Ultimate includes Vegas Pro Plus and adds two VFX plugin packages, AI-powered audio clean and stem separation, and photo editing and digital artist tools. It includes Mocha Pro and Continuum, plus CrumplePop SoundApp as a standalone audio toolkit, and Optics as a photo editing toolkit available as an Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom plugin and as a standalone application.

Pricing is clear, and licensing is not “one size fits all”

Vegas Pro and Vegas Pro Plus are available with subscription or perpetual licensing. Vegas Pro Ultimate is available as a subscription plan.

Monthly subscriptions are $17.95 for Vegas Pro, $24.95 for Vegas Pro Plus, and $39.95 for Vegas Pro Ultimate. Annual subscriptions are $99.95, $149.95, and $199.95.

A practical gotcha lives in plain sight: offline Speech-to-Text and offline Text-to-Speech are subscription-only features in this release, so your licensing choice directly affects your feature set.

The toolbox effect, now with fewer missing pieces

The product family list includes tools for video editing, VFX, motion graphics, audio, and photography plugins powered by AI, and it includes – as you damn well know – products such as Silhouette, SynthEyes, Continuum, Sapphire and Mocha Pro, alongside Vegas Pro and multiple audio tools like CrumplePop and Sound Forge. Currently it is not included in the Suite, just in the family – but we’ll see what happens there.

For my own day-to-day, that combination feels like a pretty complete toolbox, because it covers editorial, tracking, roto and paint, camera solving, and a lot of audio cleanup and finishing in one place, with fewer reasons to go hunting for another wrench mid-project.

Sound Forge

Sound Forge is a dedicated environment for detailed audio work beyond the timeline, positioned for precise editing, mastering, and restoration. It is also a comprehensive tool for audio recording, editing, sound design, and mastering, built around a single audio file workflow.

Features cited include recording up to 32 channels at once, automatic record start, a second-source audio option, restoration tools, quick dialogue editing, applying effects, and WaveColor visualisation, plus fast background operations intended to save time. It is integrating seamlessly with Vegas Pro or working alongside a preferred digital audio workstation.

Acid Pro

Acid Pro is the third new tool in the Boris -Verse, and it is a loop-based music software designed to make it easy to create songs and beats without prior experience, built around a simple workflow and a large collection of royalty-free loops. It includes automatic pitch and tempo matching, live preview, multitrack recording, editing, and mixing.

It also includes hit-point markers for tight video sync and an intuitive timeline arranger. In other words, it sits right where a lot of editors first meet music creation: quick structure, quick iteration, and fast alignment to picture, without pretending every user wants to become a full-time producer overnight. That last part is a personal reaction, not a spec sheet.

Training and upgrades

To celebrate the launch, Vegas Pro users can claim complimentary access to the Vegas Pro Essentials training series, a premium download normally priced at $49.95. The 22-part course includes more than three hours of instruction, with included footage, project files, and high-resolution lesson videos, and it is available until Friday, December 5, 2026.

For those who don’t know the tool: DaVinci Resolve and Fusion Studio from Blackmagic Design cover edit, grade, comp and audio in one ecosystem. They run on macOS, Windows, Windows for Arm and Linux, with Desktop Video hardware for monitoring and dedicated control panels for tactile users.

Blackmagic Design has released DaVinci Resolve 20.3.2 and Fusion Studio 20.3.2. This is a maintenance update. No fireworks. Plenty of fixes. Sensible improvements in places that tend to bite.

The Resolve installer adds the main application, remote monitoring components and hardware control panel utilities. It also installs Blackmagic RAW Player and Blackmagic Proxy Generator. The free version of DaVinci Resolve 20 retains the same image processing pipeline as DaVinci Resolve Studio, supports unlimited resolution media, but limits mastering and output to Ultra HD or lower and supports only a single GPU on Windows and Linux.

Resolve Studio continues to offer multi GPU support, 4K output, motion blur effects, temporal and spatial noise reduction, multiple AI based tools, HDR tools, camera tracker, voice isolation, surround and immersive audio, additional Resolve FX, stereoscopic 3D tools and remote rendering.

Compatibility without time travel

Blackmagic states that project libraries remain compatible with DaVinci Resolve 19.1.4 at the database level. However, once a project is created or opened in 20.3.2, it cannot be reopened in 19.1.4. Facilities are advised to create full project library backups and individual project backups before upgrading. In shared environments, that advice is less a suggestion and more a survival strategy.

Edit page tweaks and trim discipline

A new preferences option enables dynamic trim in the Trim Editor on the Edit page. Dynamic trim adjusts edit points during playback, useful in dialogue heavy sequences and fast turnaroudn work. Subtitles receive more consistent kerning, a small but relevant change for broadcasters and OTT deliveries with strict QC.

Progressive renders are now supported for interlaced timelines with the same frame rate. Lens correction issues affecting vertical clips have been addressed. Media pool column header localisation issues are fixed, and slow media management startup in larger projects has been improved.

Magic Mask cache is now retained when pasting node attributes. Previously, pasting could invalidate cached analysis and trigger recalculation. The update reduces unnecessary GPU recompute in grading sessions that reuse node structures.

Faster AI scaling on Apple Silicon

SuperScale Enhanced is now up to 2.5 times faster when using the Apple Neural Engine. Blackmagic does not detail test conditions or hardware models. The claim applies specifically to SuperScale Enhanced and Apple Silicon systems with Neural Engine support. Not independently verified at press time.

Render speeds for side by side stereoscopic 3D renders have also been improved, although no numbers are provided. Timecode issues for proxies generated from stereoscopic 3D EXR files are addressed, along with incorrect render size estimates for some MXF clips.

Colour science and format fixes

Resolve 20.3.2 adds support for Fujifilm F Gamut C coloursapce and F Log2 C gamma. A ProRes RAW decode issue when using ACES has been fixed. Sony ARW decoding issues and incorrect pass through behaviour for some Sony XAVC renders are addressed.

Retention of MaxCLL metadata from XML when exporting IMF is corrected, relevant for HDR compliance. Several audio related issues are fixed, including problems with Dolby Atmos external renderers and an ADC reverb delay compensation issue in some projects. Support for Dolby headphone personalisation of binaural monitoring is added.

Fusion Studio joins the update

Blackmagic has also updated Fusion Studio to version 20.3.2. The installer adds Fusion Studio along with hardware control panel utilities, Blackmagic RAW Player and Blackmagic Proxy Generator. Fusion Studio 20.3.2 adds support for Fujifilm F Log2 C. It fixes issues with start and end render scripts on tools, resolves some character style problems in MultiText, and addresses an issue with the Import Footage menu. General performance and stability improvements are included.

Minimum system requirements across Resolve and Fusion Studio remain aligned with the current platform baselines, including macOS 14 Sonoma or later, Windows 10 Creators Update, Windows 11 for ARM on supported Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite systems, and Rocky Linux 8.6 on Linux. Monitoring requires Desktop Video 12.9 or later.

Resolve 7 Resolve Studio 20.3.2 and Fusion Studio 20.3.2 do not introduce major new toolsets. They fix edge cases, improve consistency and add targeted performance gains. In other words, the sort of update most facilities actually need. As always, new tools and innovations should be tested before use in production.
