“The Medicus” was one of the most lavish and at the same time one of the most successful productions for Germany last year. The epochal bestseller film adaptation was produced by UFA Cinema in co-production with ARD Degeto and Beta Cinema.

Pixomondo was responsible for the VFX work and even set up a location in Cologne for the major project. The company took this step in part to be close to CinePostproduction, which was responsible for on-set sample supervision and final colour grading for the film.

A total of 174 VFX shots were required for Pixomondo to create the medieval environment of the original book. The film was shot in Cologne, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and the Moroccan desert. Pixomondo brought the 11th century city of Isfahan back to life in 3D form, realised a CG sandstorm, a lion sequence, CG crowds and much more.

By the way, anyone who missed “Medicus” in the cinema: This Christmas, the cinema film will come to television as a two-parter. The executive producer of “Medicus”, Sebastian Werninger from UFA Fiction, revealed this to us in an interview at FMX. More on this in an upcoming issue of DP.
