In nuce: Nvidia, the developer of graphics processors, has released an extensive update for Omniverse Enterprise. This is according to a message on 80.lv, published on 4 January this year (based on the official announcement of 3 January 2023 by Senior Director Brian Harrison, published on Nvidia’s blog). The most important new features include: Omniverse DeepSearch, new Omniverse Connectors, innovations for key components of the Omniverse platform – and generally higher performance.

In toto: Interested parties will find a compact list of the most important new features below.

• New connectors: These are intended to allow users a seamless workflow across application boundaries. According to the announcement on 80.lv, applications such as Adobe Substance 3D Painter, Autodesk Alias, PTC Creo and Paraview from Kitware are now also supported as part of the update. Substance 3D Painter is a 3D texturing tool (see Digital Production from 10.06.2022); Autodesk Alias is an industrial design application that is primarily used for automotive design; PTC Creo is a professional 3D CAD(computer-aided design) application; Paraview is used to visualise scientific content and is available open source.
• Omniverse DeepSearch will be made generally available. In our report from 12 August 2022, we outlined how DeepSearch works for our readers. There we wrote: “With DeepSearch, users can also search databases filled with 3D assets that have not been indexed. To do this, the user uses keywords (e.g. “yellow pyramid”, “high tower” or “pointed octahedron”) to find the objects they are looking for.”
• Key components of Omniverse DeepSearch have been improved: These improvements include the fact that Omniverse Create now supports Nvidia DLSS 3 (Deep Learning Super Sampling). Digital Production reported on DLSS 3 on 11 November 2022, as part of the release of Omniverse Create 2022.3, explaining that the support would not only result in “performance improvements, but also additional frames would be generated in real time – via the RTX renderer”. The background to this: DLSS 3 is a new technology that handles render upscaling and frame generation, built into Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards.” In addition to DLSS 3, the update now also supports multiple viewports, Omniverse View has been made more user-friendly and Omniverse Nucleus comes with improved IT management tools.
• Revised user interface: The user interface should be more user-friendly and perform better. In addition, Kubernetes from Google is now also supported. According to wikipedia.org, Kubernetes is an open-source system that can be used to manage container applications.
• New cloud containers: These are offered for, as stated on 80.lv, “Enterprise Nucleus Server, Replicator, Farm and Isaac Sim for Amazon Web Services” (see links for further details). It goes on to say that these new cloud containers are particularly useful for facilitating teamwork.

In nuce: Colorfront, a developer of on-set dailies and transcoding systems for Hollywood studios, showcased the new features of its Express Dailies, On-Set Dailies and Transcoding product lines at this year’s IBC (International Broadcast Convention). The new functions mainly relate to connectivity and image processing.

In toto: Below are some of the most interesting innovations that Colorfront presented for its product lines at IBC 2022. For a complete list of the new functions, please refer to the sources at the end of this message.

• Integration into NDI and IMF component-based media workflows: The developer’s Express Dailies, On-Set Dailies and Transcoders mentioned above all offer 16-bit NDI video output. Network Device Interface(NDI) is a royalty-free software specification developed by NewTek that enables video-compatible products to deliver and receive frame-accurate, low-latency video over a local area network. With regard to IMF media-related workflows, validation tools provide important information during packing and quality testing processes. This includes incorrect Dolby Vision metadata, which is recognised, as well as volume issues or inconsistent letterboxing/frame line settings. IMF (Interoperable Master Format) “is a file-based media format that simplifies the delivery and storage of audiovisual masters intended for multiple territories and platforms.” (Source for the IMF definition: imfug.com)
• Support for AWS cloud storage (Amazon Web Services) and digital camera/audio formats: For cloud-based operations, Colorfront offers accelerated importing and faster uploading of media to AWS S3 cloud storage. Amazon Simple Storage Service (AWS S3) is used by customers to store data volumes for various use cases – including: Websites, archiving, enterprise applications. • Tools regarding timeline editorials and user interface: This includes an improved timeline for multi-channel audio editing, a spatial audio workflow, a hot-key editor, and an improved user experience.
