Xencelabs introduces the Pen Display 16 Lite, a 4K OLED mobile tablet positioned as a travel-ready counterpart to the company’s larger studio panels. The device arrives with a 12 mm chassis, a weight of 1.2 kg, and a panel that outputs 1.07 billion colors across Adobe RGB, sRGB, P3-D65, and Rec.709. Pricing starts at US$799, while the full Pen Display 16 Bundle with power hub and Mobile Easel comes in at US$1249.00. The optional Xencelabs Desktop Easel for Pen Display 16 is available separately for US$179.00.

The fanless display uses a 4K OLED 10-bit panel with 3840 × 2160 pixels at 60 Hz. Super AG Etching reduces reflections without introducing the usual crystalline artefacts common to aggressive matte coatings. According to Xencelabs, this allows long sessions under bright environments or ceiling lighting without visual noise on the panel surface. Brightness reaches 300 cd/m² when used with the hub included in the bundle.

The device integrates Kensington NanoSaver security, USB-C (DP alt mode) connectivity, and an EMR input stack shared with the company’s recent pens. Both the 3-Button Pen + Eraser v2 and Thin Pen + Eraser v2 are bundled, each offering 8192 pressure levels, ±60-degree tilt, and 5080 LPI resolution. The pens remain cordless and battery-free. The optional Quick Keys remote adds an OLED UI, up to 44 shortcuts per application, and up to 53 hours runtime.

For portability, the 410 × 259.4 mm chassis fits into typical backpacks or soft cases. The Mobile Easel included in the Pen Display 16 Bundle supports 18- and 32-degree working positions.

Wacom has announced the MovinkPad Pro 14, the newest member of its portable creative pad lineup. Building on the earlier MovinkPad 11, the Pro model introduces a 14-inch OLED display, stronger performance, and extended creative applications. It is designed for illustrators, designers, animators, and 3D artists who need a mobile all-in-one device that can also integrate into desktop workflows.

Positioning in Wacom’s Lineup

Aimed at artists and illustrators who want to leave the PC (and Apple) at home, the MovinkPad 11 combines Wacom’s proven pen tech with an Android 14-based tablet—all for $449. And all the options of Android!

Purpose-Built for Drawing, Not Social Media

While the iPad remains the darling of generalists and influencers, the MovinkPad 11 doubles down on a focused sketching experience. Boot the device, and you’re instantly in Wacom Canvas (their new drawing app), with a “Quick Draw” feature that lets you wake-and-sketch by just tapping the screen with the pen. If you’d rather use Clip Studio Paint, you’ll find a 2-year license for Clip Studio Paint DEBUT included.

You won’t find bloatware, endless notifications, or pre-installed games. The MovinkPad 11 is intentionally distraction-free. It’s built for pen-first digital artists, not for binge-watchers or TikTok influencers.

The MovinkPad 11 is built around a 11.45″ IPS display (2200×1440 px, 400 nits, 99% sRGB, 16.7 million colors) topped with etched, anti-glare glass. The 60/90 Hz refresh rate and 1200:1 contrast ratio keep the panel functional, if not bleeding-edge.

Under the hood, you’ll find a MediaTek Helio G99 processor (octa-core), 8 GB RAM, and 128 GB of internal storage (no microSD slot, so you’ll need to mind your file management). The battery weighs in at 7,700 mAh—official runtime isn’t stated, but field testing will reveal if it keeps up with long sessions. The unit measures 266 × 182 × 7 mm and weighs 588 g. This is slightly heavier than an iPad Air, but still travel-friendly.

Pen Tech: The Familiar Wacom Experience

The MovinkPad 11 comes bundled with the Wacom Pro Pen 3—the same EMR (electromagnetic resonance) technology trusted by Cintiq and MobileStudio users. Pros and Cons for the Production Artist

Pros: This is a genuinely standalone, purpose-built drawing device. No PC or Mac tether required. The boot-to-canvas workflow is immediate, and pen performance is exactly what you’d expect from Wacom. There’s little here to distract you from actually producing work.

Cons: The IPS screen, while accurate, doesn’t match OLED for contrast or punch. Storage is limited to 128 GB—no card slot—so heavy PSDs and reference folders will require management. Battery life is unspecified, so don’t trust it with live client work until you’ve tested your own workflow.

Verdict: iPad Alternative with Real Artist Cred

The MovinkPad 11 is Wacom’s most convincing standalone effort to date: focused, familiar, and ready for serious sketching. At $449, it undercuts the iPad Air + Pencil combo, without resorting to buzzwords or over-the-top promises. The value proposition: less social, more studio. For anyone wanting out of the Apple ecosystem (or just wanting less “influencer” and more “artist”), it’s a compelling choice.

As always, remember: specs don’t always tell the whole story. Test any new device in your own production pipeline before you trust it with paid projects or color-critical work.

Digital painters can now experience lighting effects that until now belonged in high-end 3D: Escape Motions has announced Rebelle 8, and its flagship feature, RealShader, aims to change how oil painting feels on screen. With real-time ray-traced soft shadows and new environment maps, digital brush strokes now cast their own convincing, photorealistic shadows.

The update is due at the end of Q3 2025, with Early Access for existing users launching in late June or July. This release is positioned as one of the largest in the history of the product, and it is targeted at both fine artists and production professionals looking for the tactile feedback of thick oil paint—without needing to open a window.

RealShader: From Flat Strokes to Photoreal Surfaces

Rebelle 8 Pro’s new RealShader doesn’t just simulate light—it actually reflects it, with real-time calculations based on genuine photo-based environment maps. Artists can choose between two photographic environment maps—Environment 1 (for strong reflection effects) and Environment 2 (for a subtler, more natural gloss). There’s also a Legacy mode for users who want Rebelle 7’s familiar flat look.

These aren’t generic 3D shaders: they’re specifically tuned for the complex way light scatters and reflects on oil paint, complete with variable reflection and granulation for every stroke. For anyone compositing digital oils or building assets for stylized cinematics, the result is a paint surface that finally reacts like the real thing—at least on screen.

SoftShadows: Ray Tracing Right on the Canvas

In a move that most GPU renderers would envy, Rebelle 8 integrates real-time ray tracing directly into the canvas. Every brush stroke, no matter how thick or thin, will cast soft shadows onto the paint below, using accurate color and material data. White and bright strokes reflect light most strongly; darker, richer tones absorb light and throw out deeper, richer shadows.

The upshot is instant, tactile visual feedback while you work. Strokes sit “on top” of each other convincingly, and subtle changes in shape, color, or impasto result in believable interaction with the simulated environment light.

NanoPixel 2: Upscale to the Limit

One of Rebelle’s original selling points—massive upscaling without losing brush fidelity—gets a huge technical boost in Rebelle 8. The upgraded NanoPixel 2 engine can now export paintings up to 20×20 their working size, compared to 4×4 in Rebelle 7 Pro. That means artists can export work up to 32,000×32,000 pixels in a single pass (TIFF format allows unlimited export size).

This makes it practical to produce ultra-high-resolution, print-ready files that preserve every brush hair and every granulation map, with no visible aliasing even on massive canvas prints or projected surfaces.

Workflow Tweaks for Real Production

The changes in Rebelle 8 go beyond surface effects. The release also includes a slate of workflow-focused upgrades:

Rebelle 8’s Early Access will be available in late June or July for existing users. Anyone who purchased Rebelle 7 from May 28, 2025 onwards will be eligible for a free upgrade to the equivalent edition of Rebelle 8 when it launches.

Pricing for new users has not been disclosed at time of writing; details will be published via Escape Motions once available.

Production-Ready? Test Before You Trust

While RealShader and NanoPixel 2 promise much, every digital painter, concept artist, or VFX art lead should run these new features through their own production tests before integrating them into final pipelines. As with any significant rendering change, subtle differences in shadow, reflection, and export can affect compositing, color grading, and print output.

Some time has passed since our first report on “The Element” – at least in the fast-moving world of software. But now version 2.0 is available for download – and here is an excerpt of the latest features – whether it was worth the wait or whether you should simply switch your asset management to this system now is up to you.

Together what belongs together!

The outstanding feature of the 2.0 release is that the element now brings together all parts of a 3D asset – not just the geometry, but also textures. In everyday life, this means that searching for textures and their maps is now done in seconds.

Even if assets from other sources are used, they can be organised and found in a clear standard – and nobody has to try to assign sloppily named folders any more! But not only textures – render layers, normals and roughness files are also combined, categorised and made searchable.

And just to remind you: the element manages, indexes, analyses, searches and presents images, icons, image sequences, 3D assets, 3D SceneFiles (Houdini, Maya, Blender …), project files (Nuke, After Effects, Photoshop …), HDRI images, 360° videos and even PDFs.

Infinite scroller

In principle, there are not “too many assets” – but it can be difficult to find them. The new element offers a corresponding view for this: In the “infinite window” you can simply browse through everything without distraction – also good if you don’t know exactly what you want yet and just want to have a look at what’s available in the library.

As everything is AI-based nowadays, the element naturally also includes this – here in the variant that similar assets are found – be it to tidy up the database, for variations of a shot or simply because you can’t get enough of a motif, it’s up to you!

Users who have footage and plates with different elements that are similar in their initial state – I’m just saying explosions – will find the new video player handy. Within the element, you can see what happens beyond the preview frame – and rotate, flip or fold the image with just one click – and see whether the plate is suitable for the special “upside down” application.

Anyone who collects HDR spheres – and let’s be honest, who doesn’t – needs a preview where you can see exactly what is happening – which is why there is now an exposure slider for quickly adjusting the brightness. Handy for everyday use, but why don’t the other tools have this too?

Other features, such as an enhanced ingest for all possible formats, a tidier (or customisable by you!) interface, as well as better error descriptions for ingest and pipeline, and lots of bug fixes and minor adjustments are of course also included.
