In nuce: The production studio Goodbye Kansas has released a VFX breakdown for the upcoming video game Dune: Awakening. Goodbye Kansas realised the announcement trailer for the MMO (massively multiplayer online game) (see below).

In toto: Dune: Awakening is based on both the original book by author Frank Herbert and the latest film adaptation by director Denis Villeneuve. The video game is currently in development at the Norwegian company Funcom , which is also responsible for the games Conan Exiles, Dune: Spice Wars, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden, Moons of Madness, The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey .

In nuce: In this look behind the scenes of the sci-fi blockbuster Dune, the creative minds at Double Negative (DNEG for short) take the floor with a deep dive. We mean: with the Köpper into the sand dune!

What does the deep dive on Dune offer? This feature-length making-of is entitled “Beyond Sand & Spice: The VFX of Dune” and features contributions from Tristan Myles, Paul Lambert, Janet Yale (all VFX Supervisors at DNEG Vancouver), Robyn Luckham (Global Head of Animation & Animation at DNEG) and Brian Connor (Visual Effects Supervisor at DNEG). The panel will be moderated by Ian Failes, journalist at visual effects magazine Before & Afters, a newly launched magazine covering all technical aspects of modern film production.

Director Denis Villeneuve and Double Negative: a dream team? The girls and boys from Double Negative have already worked on the Villeneuve production and sci-fi sequel Blade Runner 2049.

Dune at the 20th VES Awards: Dune was one of the big winners at the last Visual Effects Society awards ceremony. Denis Villeneuve’s cinematic reinterpretation was able to impress in no less than four categories – namely: “Outstanding Visual Effects in Photoreal Feature”, “Outstanding Model in a Photoreal or Animated Project”, “Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature” and – last but not least – “Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature”. Dune at the 94th Academy Awards: On 28 March 2022 , we told you about how “Dune” won perhaps the most coveted film award in the (Western) world six times. The golden statue went home to Greig Fraser (“Cinematography”), Joe Walker (“Film Editing”), Hans Zimmer (“Original Score”), Patrice Vermette and Zsuzsanna Sipos (“Production Design”), Mac Ruth, Mark Mangini, Theo Green, Doug Hemphill and Ron Bartlett (“Sound”) and – our Muad’Dib ears pricked up – Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Gerd Nefzer were honoured for Best Visual Effects.

Dune: How We Did The Visual Effects

In nuce: FMX 2022 kicks off in the first week of May and the majority of this year’s event programme has now been finalised. Some of the highlights: Presentations on the Oscar-winning films “Encanto” and “Dune”, as well as special events such as a sound masterclass or the screening of “Ron’s Gone Wrong”.

The technology behind Encantos Casita: The creative minds of “Walt Disney Animation Studios” will present technical innovations that were used to create the remarkable animated film “Encanto”. The speakers will be: Scott Kersavage (Visual Effects Supervisor), Tad Miller (Technical Supervisor), Nadim Sinno (Associate Technical Supervisor) and the Technical Directors Justin Kern, Nellie Robinson and Annamarie Fuchs.

Ron’s Gone Right: How to realise a debut film with two start-up studios: Director JP Vine will take a look behind the scenes of the animated film “Ron’s Gone Wrong”. By the way: FMX visitors will have the opportunity to attend a screening of the film on 5 May. Further information can be found at fmx.de.

llumination – “Sing 2”: CG supervisors Boris Jacq and Richard Adenot will provide exciting insights. The two supervisors will talk about: how the film was created, but also about topics such as character animation, environments, texturing and lighting.

Theo Green on sound design and music composition: Theo Green will talk about the fluid boundaries between sound design and music composition. He will also take a look at his work with Hans Zimmer on “Dune”. Theo Green is an Oscar-winning sound designer, supervising sound editor (e.g. “Dune”, “Blade Runner 2049”) and composer (“The Gambler”).

In nuce: So they’ve been awarded, the trophies of the 94th Academy Awards. If we were the society section of your lifestyle magazine of choice, we would now be working our way through Will Smith and Jessica Chastain’s inspiring acceptance speech, but as a specialist medium for visual effects, we are of course primarily interested in which films won the prestigious film prize in categories such as “Animated Feature Film”, “Cinematography”, “Film Editing” or “Production Design”.

What are the big winners among the visual effects films? Disney’s “Encanto” was able to position itself as the winner in the “Animated Feature Film” category, beating off competition from the co-nominees, consisting of the animated documentary “Flee”, the Pixar film “Luca”, the Netflix film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines” and Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon”.

However, the mega-success that also ensured multiple cinema visits within our editorial team is Denis Villeneuve’s remake of Frank Herbert’s science fiction novel Dune.
