In nuce: VFX service provider MPC has released a new VFX breakdown – this time for the comedy horror streaming series Wednesday. The breakdown is just under three minutes long and is populated with powerful monsters, mermaid doves and gothic horror en masse.

In toto: At the centre of the Netflix series is the titular Wednesday Addams (played by Jenna Ortega); the baby of the most famous horror family in film and series history: the Adams family. The executive producer of the series is director Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, among others), who also directed the first four of the eight episodes. In Die Zeit, journalist Lars Weisbrod aptly describes Tim Burton as “the most cheerful horror artist in the USA”, as “a man who knows that scary fun also involves wetting your pants a little in fear”. Susan Vahabzadeh writes about protagonist Wednesday Addams for the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “She loves black, is always in a bad mood and has a morbid streak, which makes her fit into the Burton universe, which is favoured by outsiders”; Vahabzadeh goes on to describe the series as a “mix of Harry Potter, superhero fantasy and crime thriller”.

What is The Night of the Living Dead about? When Barbra (Judith O’Dea) visits her father’s grave with her brother Johnny (Russell Streiner), they are suddenly attacked by a strange pale man. Barbra manages to escape to an abandoned farmhouse nearby, where Ben (Duane Jones) arrives a little later. They discover other people holed up in the cellar: The couple Tom (Keith Wayne) and Judy (Judith Ridley) as well as Harry and Helen Cooper (Karl Hardman and Marilyn Eastman) with their daughter Karen (Kyra Schon). They learn from the news of a deadly epidemic that is spreading rapidly and resurrecting the recently deceased as the flesh-eating undead. The barricaded and increasingly besieged country house becomes the last refuge in the relentless battle against the zombies.

In nuce: Zombies! The undead! And the living dead anyway! The Spanish VFX service provider El Ranchito (Stranger Things Season 4, Westworld Season 3, The Mandalorian Season 1, etc.) has released a VFX breakdown in which zombies rampage through the action film Valley of the Dead (original title: Malnazidos).

In toto: The film was realised by director Javier Ruiz Caldera. The film is set during the Spanish Civil War. Film critic Elsa Fernández-Santos writes in her review of 11 March this year on elpais.com that Valley of the Dead borrows from the Indiana Jones films and is reminiscent of the classic horror film Night of the Living Dead by George A. Romero. Victor López G. described the film as an “extraordinary zombie feast” on espinof.com on11.10.2020. Imdb.com lists the film’s release date as 2020.

Institutionalised body horror

Rejoice: Blood and gore fans and admirers of the classic film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Because head nurse Ratchet is getting her own Netflix series. However, if you are intolerant of blood splatter or mutilation, you should avoid the play button on the breakdown video by FuseFX.

Last year’s horror film Doctor Sleep was two things: a film adaptation of Stephen King’s sequel novel of the same name and a sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s classic film, which was released forty years ago. Instead of Jack Nicholson, Ewan McGregor was now under the spell of supernatural forces. But things like streams of blood bursting out from between lift doors, the inhospitable Overlook Hotel or its iconic carpet pattern remained. As can be seen in the corresponding VFX breakdown of Rise.
