In nuce: Visual effects service provider Rising Sun Pictures (The Boys, Thor: Love and Thunder, Black Widow, etc.) has released a one-and-a-half-minute VFX breakdown for the first season of the Star Wars series Andor. The series tells the prequel to the film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Turn the page: In our Digital Production 05 : 2022 went up – with the thematic focus on Star Wars. We watched the comedic unpacking short film E-11 (named after the laser cannon of the same name). In the accompanying workshop report “Unpacked! Or: The Making of E-11: A Star Wars Fan Film”, filmmaker Robert Hranitzky poses the question “What if the E-11 blaster was a real, new product – and a stormtrooper unboxed and reviewed the thing on YouTube?” On the other hand, 15 years of heart and soul went into the second fan film called Descendants of Order 66 den Weg before the love letter to the George Lucas Cinematic Universe could celebrate its premiere. In terms of content, Descendants of Order 66 dares to build a bridge between Star Wars Episode III and IV. The issue is also available as a free e-paper.

In nuce: Visual effects service provider Hybride Technologies has released an almost five-minute VFX breakdown for Disney’s streaming series The Book of Boba Fett.

In toto: If you want to make friends with the rough-and-tumble Wookie Black Krrsantan or get to know the bounty hunter Cad Bane personally, you should dive into the George Lucas Cinematic Universe with The Book of Boba Fett. As with its predecessor series The Mandalorian, an LED volume stage was used for the Boba Fett series. The deepfake technology also created a surprise effect for viewers of the series; it helped to wipe a young Luke Skywalker out of the pipeline.

The Book of Boba Fett – Hybrid VFX Breakdown

In nuce: VFX service provider Image Engine has released a VFX breakdown for the streaming series Obi-Wan Kenobi. The Force is with Image Engine, as the VFX house has already created visual effects for the series The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. Thanks to this previous experience, visual effects supervisor Andy Walker and his team were able to deliver eye-catching effects for this latest Star Wars series.

In toto: Along with the VFX breakdown, a report has been published on awn.com detailing the story behind the 360 or so VFX shots that Image Engine created for Obi-Wan Kenobi – from giant CG environments of the mining world of Mapuzo, set extensions, vehicle tyre removal, laser swords cutting through cargo doors, Imperial henchman laser cannons, to Star Wars-style lightsaber duels. According to Andy Walker, for example, Houdini was used to create the flora of the desert landscape.

The completed mini-series has been released on Disney-Plus, comprises six episodes (each around 45 to 55 minutes) and is set after the events of the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith.

In toto: The everyday life of Jedi retiree Obi-Wan Kenobi: having a camel replaced by an eopie (the Star Wars alternative to the desert mount), munching on breakfast cereal for Jedi Knight veterans, receiving a visit from Senator Bail Organa (played by Jimmy Smits), spying on a child-headed Luke Skywalker – and having his evening ruined by Jedi hunter Reva Sevander, aka The Third Sister. There’s also a reunion with the most famous space dictator who can wear a cape without it looking like fashion crime.
