<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A new tool from <em>Ehsan Kiani</em> hits the <a href="https://www.artstation.com/redmorph">ArtStation Marketplace</a>, designed to let Substance 3D Painter users add <em>realistic medical effects</em> to skin textures. The tool is called <em>MedTool</em> and runs as a skin material generator inside Substance 3D Painter. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe class="youtube-player" width="1200" height="675" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8MxrkKxoPx4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent" allowfullscreen="true" style="border:0;" sandbox="allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox"></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the desired bandage has been dialled in, the results can be exported directly from Substance 3D Painter, using the usual texture export workflows. </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-works-in-ink-not-blood"><span id="works-in-ink-not-blood">Works in Ink, Not Blood</span></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">MedTool continues a trend of extending Substance 3D Painter beyond general-purpose materials. As we covered in our previous article <a href="https://digitalproduction.com/2025/02/20/mastering-ink-in-substance-3d-painter/">“Mastering Ink in Substance 3D Painter”</a> (Also by Kiani!) Painter’s generator system is becoming a flexible platform for specialised texturing workflows. With MedTool, that flexibility now covers anatomical detailing, whether for horror, trauma sim, or straight-up skin study.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-full"><img data-recalc-dims="1" fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1200" height="675" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/file3.jpg?resize=1200%2C675&#038;quality=80&#038;ssl=1" alt="" class="wp-image-182911" ></figure>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-requirements-pricing-and-compatibility"><span id="requirements-pricing-and-compatibility">Requirements, Pricing, and Compatibility</span></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">MedTool is compatible with Adobe Substance 3D Painter. As it uses Painter’s built-in generator system, no additional plugins are required. The <a href="https://www.artstation.com/marketplace/p/56bpY/substance-medtool">toolset is available here</a> for 8€ in the Standard License, and a extended Studio License is 110€. Though, we shudder to think which studios would use that everyday! </p>

<h4 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-stability-first-then-surgery"><span id="stability-first-then-surgery">Stability First, Then Surgery</span></h4>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">As always, especially those promising to do a lot with a single shader, stability testing is advised. Artists should check for compatibility with workflows, export consistency across rendering engines, and real-world performance inside their own pipeline before deploying the tool in client-facing productions. Because the only thing worse than a procedural open wound is a non-deterministic export crash.</p>
