In nuce: The seventh edition of Adobe Engineering Hours will take place next week on Wednesday, 16 February, at 11 a.m. to be precise.

In nuce: Adobe releases an update for Premiere Pro, which optimises workflows for video and audio editing on the one hand and improves performance on the other.

What new features can you expect? The focus is on the new feature called Remix, which went into beta at Adobe Max 2021 and is now officially available in Premiere Pro. Audio editors can also look forward to Adobe Sensei’s artificial intelligence. The new release also answers the question of whether export for 10-bit 420 HEVC formats is supported. In addition to these major new features, you can also expect smaller functional additions.

What is Remix? This new feature utilises Adobe Sensei’s artificial intelligence to allow you to adjust the length of audio tracks with just a few clicks. According to Adobe, editors can use Sensei to adapt music clips to video content at high speed.

What can Speech to Text do? With the “Speech to Text” feature, as it is called in German, you can now also use transcription offline. In addition, Speech to Text should now work up to three times faster. In addition, the feature should now work up to three times faster than before on computers equipped with Intel Core i9 or Apple M1. On computers with other current processors, the speed should at least double.

What about the export for 10-bit 420 HEVC formats? This export should work ten times faster from now on. Thanks to the new hardware-accelerated encoding in Premiere Pro, editors using a Windows system with Intel or NVIDIA graphics processors can now work more easily with colour-intensive 10-bit and HDR formats.

Is GPU acceleration available for additional effects? According to Adobe, the “Linear Aperture” and “Block Resolution” effects now work faster thanks to GPU acceleration.

Has Canon EOS R5 C camera support been added? Yes, Premiere Pro now also supports video material from the Canon EOS R5 C.

Shot Matching & Scene Comparison aka. grading-as-you-go

With what is probably by far the biggest update for Premiere Pro CC, Adobe really does have a make-awesome button to present at NAB. The AI-driven engine Sensei is going full throttle and, with Shot to Shot colour correction and Scene Comparison, enables a much more pleasant way to achieve a consistent look between shots in different day and lighting situations. The entire process is non-destructive – nothing is baked until it has been rendered. And anyone who is still not satisfied with the result after a click can tweak the individual parameters afterwards.

Auto-ducking

There was also a lot of demand for auto-ducking, which Adobe was happy to fulfil in this update. Automatic audio ducking, i.e. the process by which audio levels are kept lower in order to emphasise voice tracks properly, is now an integral part of the Essential Sound Panel in Premiere Pro CC. Users can select the sound source to which the auto ducking should be orientated. After setting the sensitivity, dB reduction and time for the modified transition, Sensei can then work its magic again. Fine-tuning for all settings can also be carried out here afterwards.

Do not forget: Adobe Audition CC

Despite the new auto-ducking in Premiere Pro CC, we must not forget our actual audio editor. After all, it is still the preferred choice when it comes to audio clean-up or score manipulation.

Dynamic linking?
Especially since Adobe has also greatly improved the interaction between the two programmes with its latest update. In the past, the two programmes used to “kind of get along”. In the past, exporting from PPro to Au required many cumbersome intermediate steps, which took time and nerves and also meant that the general overview of your own project suffered. With the latest release, it is now possible to open a Premiere Pro project (.pproj) directly in Audition CC. The whole thing only works in one direction so far (unfortunately there is no single audio track from Au for PPro), but there is a good chance that it will not remain a one-way street.

These are just a few of the enhancements that Adobe is presenting at NAB. All programmes have also received further additions that will make life easier for all video experts in the future, such as Canon CRM support (for C200/C700). Of course, there are still points on the wish list that Adobe could fulfil (will the PPro Project Manager ever work?). However, the improvements made so far point in the right direction.

While the NAB Show is in full swing, the 2017.1 version of Adobe Premiere Pro is getting a major new feature set. The update can already be downloaded via the Creative Cloud app. We summarise the most interesting new features from the April update here. Essential Graphics Panel

The Essential Graphics panel, which is also included in the new After Effects release, makes it easier to edit titles, shapes and animation templates. Created templates from After Effects or Premiere can be customised via the new window. Text, shape and clip layers can be edited. The panel can be found under “Window” > “Essential Graphics”. You can find out how to use the new panel in detail here.

Essential Sounds Panel

The second new panel brings together important functions for mixing audio in one control panel. You first assign the properties dialogue, music, sound effect or ambient sound to your audio clips. Once you have classified an audio file, you can use it to control and edit all relevant parameters and create templates. You can find more information on working with the new control panel here.

Audio and Adobe Audition integration

New audio effects, including surround reverb, hard limiter, mastering and many other effects are now included in Premiere Pro. Audio effects and keyframe settings can now be sent to Audition without rendering. A list of audio effects in Premiere Pro can be found here.

Text tool

Until now, anyone who wanted to create text in Premiere always had to work via an extra “Title” window. While this function can still be found as “Legacy Title”, text tools have now been added for this purpose, allowing you to create and edit titles directly in the programme monitor. The typography parameters can be displayed and edited in the new Essential Graphics Panel.

Adobe Stock Integration

As with every update, Adobe continues to expand the Adobe Stock integration. Similar to the direct publishing features in Adobe Bridge, with this update you can upload your videos directly from Premiere and the Media Encoder to Adobe Stock. This new function can be found in the export settings under “Publish”.

New feature for team projects

The new Team Projects (Beta) feature allows users to collaborate in Adobe Media Encoder CC with Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC and Prelude CC. Dynamic Link and animation templates are now also supported, as well as integration with Adobe Media Encoder. Further update features

In addition to the new features mentioned above, Ambisonic support for VR workflows, Apple Metal API, video preview for stock footage via the library and performance improvements for 4K animations have been added. All release notes for the 2017.1 update can be found here.
