A big new desk buddy for serious pixels

Meet the ColorEdge CS3200X. It features a 31.5-inch panel and 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160). which makes it the largest model in the CS Series so far, built for anyone who wants more room for images, scopes, UI chrome, and timelines that look like a subway map. The core stays familiar: You get a colour-managed monitor designed for image and video work where you need to trust what you see, not just admire it.

HDR targets and a shortcut for signal switching

HDR support comes via targets for Hybrid Log-Gamma and Perceptual Quantization. That lets the display slot into HDR workflows that use those transfer functions. A standout feature for this CS model is Sync Signal. With Sync Signal, brightness, gamma, and color space can adjust automatically based on metadata of the incoming video signal. The goal is fewer manual changes when moving between SDR and HDR and fewer chances to grade the right shot in the wrong mode.

More space, fewer gymnastics

The CS3200X targets workflows that benefit from a larger working area, especially in photo and video setups where multiple panels, large tool palettes, and long sequences compete for attention. The screen area increase gets a specific comparison: roughly 36 per cent more display area than a 27-inch monitor. That extra real estate matters when you keep a viewer large enough to judge details and still leave space for controls, without turning your workspace into a tab-juggling contest.

Wide gamut coverage and ready-to-go presets

CS3200X covers 99 % of Adobe RGB and 96 % of DCI-P3. That positions it for image editing, video post-production, colour grading, and print workflows. It ships with factory-calibrated presets for BT.709 and DCI-P3, plus an Adobe RGB preset. The point is speed. Switch the monitor to the standard you need and keep moving.

There is also a Display P3 preset aimed at consistent display when working with Apple devices such as a MacBook. The monitor can connect over USB-C and charge the connected laptop with up to 70 watts, which helps keep the desk from becoming a cable museum.

Quiet by design, tidy by intent

The CS3200X runs without active fans. That makes it a better fit for quiet rooms like grading suites or any setup where the loudest thing should be your keyboard and emotional distress about the producer’s notes, not your monitor auditioning for a wind tunnel role. The physical design also shifts. The housing uses a three-sided frameless look with an ultra slim bezel, aimed at saving space and cleanliness for multi monitor setups.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1200" height="836" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" data-id="267909" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/coloredge_cs3200x_f_hood-1.png?resize=1200%2C836&quality=72&ssl=1" alt="A large, modern computer monitor stands prominently against a plain background.
<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1200" height="1040" data-id="267900" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/coloredge_cs3200x_l_hood.png?resize=1200%2C1040&quality=72&ssl=1" alt="A sleek, professional monitor with a matte black finish, features a contoured hood above the screen to reduce glare.
<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1200" height="1040" data-id="267899" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/coloredge_cs3200x_l_hood_with_contents.png?resize=1200%2C1040&quality=72&ssl=1" alt="A high-resolution monitor with a sleek black hood displaying a vibrant beach sunset scene.

For the first time in the CS series, a light shielding hood comes in the box. It attaches magnetically and is intended to reduce reflections. It is a small accessory that usually feels like a luxury until the day you work next to a window and remember why hoods exist.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1200" height="412" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/coloredge_cs3200x_ports.jpg?resize=1200%2C412&quality=80&ssl=1" alt="A close-up view of a gray panel showcasing various ports.
Inputs, hubs, and the practical desk stuff

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="702" height="2160" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/coloredge_cs3200x_side_connector-1.jpg?resize=702%2C2160&quality=80&ssl=1" alt="A close-up view of a black panel featuring two USB ports arranged vertically.

Connectivity covers modern and classic rigs. Over USB-C, the monitor can carry the video signal, USB data, and up to 70 watts of charging through one cable. For many laptop-based setups, that is the entire “suite of necessities” right there. For workstations and other sources, there are inputs for HDMI and DisplayPort.

There is also a built-in USB hub with four downstream ports. Two are specified at 5 Gbps and two are USB 2. A built-in switching function can connect shared USB accessories such as a webcam, audio interface, mouse, and keyboard to whichever source computer is currently active. The result is less unplugging, less replugging, and fewer moments where you stare at a dead mouse like it personally betrayed you.

Calibration, uniformity, and the long game

Hardware calibration support is included, using ColorNavigator 7 with external sensors. The calibration is a lossless hardware calibration (It is an Eizo, after all!). Uniformity control comes via the Digital Uniformity Equaliser, intended to support consistent luminance distribution and colour purity across the screen.

The housing uses plastics with recycled content to reduce resource use and lower environmental impact. The warranty is 5 years and includes on-site replacement service.

Availability and the first public showing

Delivery is expected in autumn 2026, with the note that exact timing can vary by region. The first show appearance is set for the NAB Show in Las Vegas, running April 19 to April 22, 2026, at stand N1123. Go there, have a look, say hi to the team from me.

TL;DR: The Keychron K5 Max is an ultraslim, full-sized mechanical keyboard with an aluminium frame and low-profile Gateron 2.0 brown switches. It offers a crisp, tactile typing feel without excess noise and connects via Bluetooth 5.1, 2.4 GHz, or USB-C. Configuration runs directly in the browser through VIA, saving settings on the keyboard for true cross-platform reliability. No drivers, no software, just professional performance and reliability after a rocky start

The Typing

Key presses feel crisp and precise, with a satisfying level of resistance that avoids the “tinny” sensation found in some low-profile switches (and yes, we tested multiples). Also: The K5 has a layer of “acoustic foam”, which dampens the sound, but doesn’t interfere with the tactical sensation of the keys. The travel distance is reduced compared to standard mechanical keyboards, but the overall typing experience remains solid, striking a balance between comfort and responsiveness. But before I am waxing and mumbling about opinions, let’s look at some specs first!

What’s in the box?

Battery performance: the K5 Max holds up well. While 100 hours per charge is the manufacturer’s estimate, real-world usage depends on factors like RGB brightness and Bluetooth connectivity. In testing, it consistently lasted multiple weeks without needing a recharge, making it a reliable option for professionals. But, we had the RGB off mostly.

RGB comes with multiple modes, everything from “Off” to “Reasonable” to “A constant test for epileptic fits”. These can be programmed / configured to your heart’s desire. In practise: We had it off most of the time, and Imported a “shortcut helper” for a game, öhm, DCC software package. You can also go per Key, which is usefull if you have shortcuts programmed, and since the start of the test, you can change the lights on the indicator keys (Numpad), if you want or need that. Why point this out? Because we complained about it, and Keychron listend, and it came in the next update for the hardware. Perfect! It is a evolving product!

Also fixed in Formware: IN the beginning, this light was lways on, and surprisingly annoying.

Connections

The connection: We used it with a 2,4Ghz included dongle in wireless mode most of the time, and that works… well, plug it in, set the switch to “Wireless signal”, and you are basically done. If you forget the switch, then you want to consider the nice and friendly setup guide which is included in the pack. Never had a drop in the connection. Bluetooth 5.1 allows for wireless operation with up to three devices, switchable via hotkeys. Wired mode is also available via USB-C. The K5 Max supports QMK/VIA firmware, a major advantage for power users. The keyboard supports both Windows and macOS with a dedicated switch to toggle between layouts.

The special stuff

But it has something that we rarely see in ordinary Keyboards, which is its software, or better: The lack of it. Let’s talk about the magic of the VIA web interface. Say goodbye to clunky software installations hogging your RAM. With VIA, you can customize your lighting, macros, and more directly through your browser. (Launcher) Any Chrome based browser works (and now you can guess that I’m on Firefox), and you just open the Launcher, connect, and can do all the lighting, the settings, the macros, the special keys and more.

It’s like having a magic wand for your keyboard settings, abracadabra, no background bloat! And then, there are the function keys, even F13 to F24 (on Windows). These are “legitimate” keys that are recognized by any software, and with VIA, you can plonk them down wherever you like, including the modifiers, and have a full extra row of addressable short-cut / key settings destinations. We did those with a Strg+Shift+F-key, and had literally a dozen functions without touching any menu. No settings software required!

By default, there are four layers (1&2 for Mac, 3&4 for Windows ) but you can add some, and have a special keyboard for however many software packages you want to use. How? With QMK/Via!

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" width="1200" height="500" sizes="(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" src="https://i0.wp.com/digitalproduction.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/screenshot-2025-12-15-130933.png?resize=1200%2C500&quality=72&ssl=1" alt="A dark-themed keyboard configuration interface for a Keychron K3 Mini RGB keyboard.
QMK and VIA: Custom Firmware for Mechanical Keyboards

QMK (Quantum Mechanical Keyboard) and VIA are two powerful firmware solutions that enable extensive customization of mechanical keyboards. They provide advanced remapping, macros, and per-key RGB control while ensuring flexible cross-platform functionality.

QMK (Quantum Mechanical Keyboard) is an open-source firmware that allows deep customization of keyboard functions, including remapping keys, setting up macros, and even programming advanced features like tap layers and custom lighting effects.

VIA is a GUI-based interface that simplifies QMK configuration, allowing users to make real-time changes without reflashing firmware. VIA interacts with QMK’s dynamic keymap storage So, the “easy”, browser based version, where everything is done by clicking, and you don’t need to type code. And also, where you can “manage” and look up the features you have available, or the ones you set and forgot. VIA is therefor a companion software that runs on top of QMK firmware, allowing real-time keyboard remapping without needing to flash new firmware. This is useful for users who want plug-and-play customization. Unlike QMK, which requires recompiling and flashing, VIA reads and writes keymap changes directly via USB,2,4 GHz or Bluetooth.

One of the standout aspects of the K5 Max is its balance between portability and functionality. Many full-sized mechanical keyboards are bulky, but the low-profile design makes it easy to use on any desk – if your’s is fuller with “stuff”, there are TKL, Alice and 60% version available. Also, besides the “standard” US Keys, there are German, UK, Nordic, and Swiss layouts. Each keyboard comes with a few replacement keycaps for Mac or Widows. Nice!

So, is this thing already old?

You might think so. The K5 Max has been on the market for over a year now, and at first glance you might think “Isn’t Digital Production a news magazine?” That is correct, and it is also exactly why we took our time with this test. Early firmware versions had a serious issue where, in some cases, a single key press could register 20 or even 30 times. This did not happen constantly, but often enough to be very noticeable.

At one point, we managed to get the Delete key effectively stuck, which resulted in an impressively and involuntary empty email inbox. If you are still waiting for a reply, apologies, those messages are gone and not coming back. Because of this, we paused the test and waited for a revised firmware version (Which arrive a few weeks ago, and the problem hasn’t shown up since then. Hence: Here is the article. ) That version is now out, and we have been using the keyboard again for almost a full year, with long-term, daily use. This is precisely why we feel confident calling it the new default.

Conclusion

Yes: From here on, this is the keyboard others will have to measure themselves against. The firmware and VIA-related tooling have been updated multiple times since then, and at this point the system runs reliably and predictably. After roughly a year of literal everyday use, charging every two to three weeks has become the norm, which is entirely unproblematic in practice.

For professionals, the Keychron K5 Max offers a combination of build quality, wireless functionality, configurability and mechanical precision at a very reasonable price usually well below the 100$-mark. While there are certainly other “more premium” and “higher tech” options on the market, the K5 Max positions itself as the default choice for those looking for a professional, reliable, modern mechanical keyboard. Anything less is just not good enough.

TL:DR: 5K is great if you want to have a lot of stuff on your screen, and the screen excels on displaying pure information, and otherwise is a solid companion to your main broadcast monitor.

The standout feature of the ASUS ProArt Display 5K PA27JCV is its 5K resolution (5120 x 2880 pixels). For most (but not all) work, the difference between 4K and 5K at typical (!) viewing distances can be negligible, especially when working with compressed or lower-resolution content. Scaling footage to 5K often leads to a loss of sharpness, with the added pixels not providing a noticeable improvement.

But isn’t bigger better?

Where 5K does make a significant difference is in non-video/color tasks, such as using the monitor as a secondary display for software interfaces. The clarity provided by 5K resolution is quite nice when managing complex tool-sets and windows, making this monitor ideal for professionals who rely on precise visual organization. So, if you squint at your node-tree, scroll for ages through settings, or can’t see the bottom of the To-Do-List, 5K (Especially when running it in portrait) is very nice indeed. Well, not when the To-Do-List is this long, but you know what I mean.

Pixel Density and Color Accuracy

The ProArt PA27JCV offers an impressive pixel density of 210 PPI, more than 2.5 times that of a typical 27-inch Full HD display. In terms of color accuracy, the PA27JCV covers 99% of the DCI-P3 color space, which is more than enough for content creators needing reliable colors. We measured a Delta-E below 2 (Again, the edge of what we are actually confident of saying with the available Colorimeters). That means, if you want to watch some of your footage, or have the Media Browser / Library on that screen, you will not have any problems, judging which Shots, Takes or Renders are best.

Tech Specs

The 27-inch IPS panel features 5120 x 2880 resolution with a 218 PPI density. It offers 100% sRGB, 95% Adobe RGB, and 99% DCI-P3 color accuracy. The monitor delivers 400 cd/m² typical brightness, 500 cd/m² peak HDR, and supports HDR10 with 10-bit color depth. It has USB-C connectivity with Power Delivery, and adjustable tilt, height, and pivot. VESA DisplayHDR 500 and TÜV Low Blue Light certification ensure a comfortable viewing experience. For more details, visit the ASUS ProArt Display PA27JCV Tech Specs.

One additional thing, because I personally think all company should be commended for the efforts: The packaging is almost completely plastic free, recyclable, no Styrofoam, and can be reused in some ways, or, give it to your cat – if we didn’t have to send the sample back, the editorial floof would have claimed that box.

Adaptive Color and Brightness: Pros and Cons for Color Grading

The ProArt PA27JCV features adaptive brightness and color adjustments, which automatically adjust to ambient lighting conditions. While this is useful for office work or as a secondary display, it can interfere with color-critical tasks like color grading. For professionals who require precise color accuracy, these dynamic adjustments can distort colors. Thankfully, these adaptive features can be disabled, allowing users to manually control brightness and color temperature. The settings are comprehensive, and there are many , many parameters to tweak – Adaptive light AND a sensor for background keep the screen “in the sweet spot” all day long, no matter how bright/dark the weather is outside, and no matter which of your fellow artists works under a spotlight or is going full troglodyte. Basically: The second screen in your setup gets “out of the way” and just does what it told.

But there is a backside to that: If you don’t realize there are two systems for light, and you use it as main monitor, you will either have to turn of both, or, if you didn’t read the manual with full concentration (Not that this has happened to me, ever….*cough*) you’ll think something is seriously wrong when the screen cycles into the measured area.

Brightness and HDR: Comfort and Clarity for Extended Sessions

While not the brightest monitor, the ProArt PA27JCV strikes a balance between vibrant and comfortable brightness. With VESA DisplayHDR 500 certification, it produces deep blacks and bright whites, delivering excellent contrast for professional workflows. The monitor’s peak brightness is sufficient for most tasks, providing a vibrant viewing experience without straining your eyes during extended use.

But one thing is “spot on”: The anti-glare. Asus has hit the sweet spot between “no reflections” and “crisp colors”, making the PA27 a workhorse , even in difficult “environmental situations”. Keeping with the theme of the Second screen: You can place it where it is convenient, and don’t have to worry about light-treating your environment. And, comparing to another Screen with 5K, proper Antiglare is a gamechanger – not to mention about half the price, and you get a stand included in the price.

Connectivity

The screen comes with a built-in KVM (Which we did’t test, because currently there is only one workstation around), as well as 2 HDMI 2.1, a Display Port 1.4, an USB-C (with 96 Watt Power Delivery, Displaysignal, Data and Audio, making it a single connection to your mobile Workstation), as well as a Usb-Hub with two easy to reach ports in the left corner of the screen, one USB-C and One USB-A, and last but not least, a headphone jack, if you are “hotdesking” (I don’t know if that is a verb these days…) So, that is solid and has everything you need in a Multi-Monitor Setup.

Additional thoughts after 2 Months of testing …

Since I had this screen on my desk, let me tell you a few notes – I ran it in Portrait mode, which is such a relief with the extra resolution – no more scrolling in many things and with the excellent anti-glare, the window opposite the screen does not bother me at all.

While talking about placement: The Vesa-Mount is solid and to spec, but Asus made the “Shell” around it quite tight – if you have a “bigger mount”, that might require some wiggling.

And one other thing: Since I was running it in Portrait, usually you see the “Angle” Problems with both brightness and color. Even if IPS-Panels in this case are better than TN-Panels, usually there is some “tradeoff” – but in all this time of testing, I haven’t noticed it – you have to actually look for the problem, otherwise it will not impact your daily work.

Pricing and Value: Who Should Invest?

Well, so, this means, we are the point where we ask: Should you get one?

Before considering that, there is a caveat: When you are working with the Adobe Suite, you might consider the three-month-promotion, which this screen is eligible for – so, register in the “MyAsusApp”, then click through Redeem and put in your serial number, and choose which Adobe thing you want. That lowers the actual price for the screen. If you aren’t working with the adobe tools, then… well, forget what I just said.

So, what do you have to pay for this product? The current price is around 940€, which is not cheap, but not absurd either – considering that ASUS Screens keep and are solid work machines. But, as is the development in this day and age, the street price will come down – Amazon lists the screen for 900€, and we have seen offerings around the 800€ mark – which make the screen maybe not a “steal”, but a solid offering for everybody who can’t take a 1440p – Interface anymore.

For all those die-hard Mac users, who enjoyed 5K with the old Intel iMac and are still waiting for a 27“ iMac with Apple silicon, this is good news. After all, the 5K LG (with the same panel) is not available any more, and Apple is still asking Apple prices for their screen. So, if you don’t desperately need a stylish all-in-one aluminum gadget, a tiny aluminum gadget called Mac mini Pro and this Asus model should please your eyes and your purse.

(Remark by Uli Plank, who is already slightly tippsy
around 9 p.m. after one or two Japanese Highballs
in SE-Asia, but still longing for his 2017 iMac’s screen.)

Conclusion: Best for Interface Work

The ASUS ProArt Display 5K PA27JCV excels as a high-resolution monitor for managing complex software interfaces. Its sharpness and color accuracy make it a valuable tool for professionals who need clarity and precision in their workflow. However, for tasks involving color grading, the monitor’s adaptive features and 5K resolution may not be as advantageous as they seem.

Ultimately, this monitor is best suited for professionals who need a reliable secondary screen or a sharp display for design work—not necessarily for color-critical video post-production, but as a very, very good GUI-monitor. Who would have thought that screens would diversify to a point like this!
