With version 1.40, Grid Modeler refines everyday precision tasks — the kind that make hard-surface modelling faster, cleaner and a little less frustrating.

Blender add-on developer Kushiro has released version 1.40.0 of Grid Modeler, a precision modelling tool designed to bring CAD-like control to Blender’s mesh workflows. The update focuses on refinements that simplify grid handling and topology management rather than adding new tools — a welcome direction for professionals who prefer reliability over novelty.

Grid Modeler’s concept is straightforward: you draw directly onto a grid plane, then use Boolean or extrusion operations to cut, shape or merge geometry. It’s popular among hard-surface artists, prop designers, and technical modelers who need accuracy in their layouts without leaving Blender’s viewport.

https://twitter.com/kushirosea/status/1973596208334815466

What’s New in Version 1.40

Keyboard-based grid rotation
The grid plane can now be rotated directly via the Left and Right Arrow keys, allowing rapid reorientation without breaking the creative flow. This makes quick directional adjustments during blockouts significantly faster.

Two-edge plane definition
Instead of manual grid placement, you can now select two edges to define a new grid plane automatically. This method aligns the working grid to existing geometry, improving precision when extending or modifying complex meshes.

Improved edge merging during face creation
The “Create Face” tool now handles edge merging more predictably, reducing unwanted overlaps and simplifying cleanup in dense or curved geometry.

These are minor features on paper but reduce friction during everyday modelling, particularly when toggling between local surfaces and global alignment.

Workflow Implications

While not headline-grabbing, this update reflects the ongoing professionalisation of Blender’s modelling ecosystem. Add-ons like Grid Modeler increasingly bridge the gap between CAD precision and Blender’s artistic flexibility. In production terms, the update saves clicks and cognitive load — two edges define a working plane faster than any dialog box. Artists who frequently alternate between local components (panels, bolts, recesses) will find this refinement particularly efficient. As with earlier releases, Grid Modeler integrates seamlessly with Kushiro’s other utilities such as Quick Fillet, Safe Inset and Delta Quad, all aimed at improving geometric consistency without resorting to destructive operations.

Pricing and Availability

Grid Modeler 1.40 is available for Blender 3.0+ on Gumroad at $20 (single-user licence). Updates are free for existing users.

The post Grid Modeler 1.40: Subtle but Smart Upgrades Boost Precision in Blender first appeared on DIGITAL PRODUCTION and was written by Bela Beier.
