PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN – ON STRANGER TIDES, the cinema blockbuster of summer 2011, effortlessly follows the success of the previous three instalments and confidently took the top position in the cinema charts as by far the best opening of the year. In Germany, the 3D adventure gave Disney its best cinema opening of all time on a regular weekend (without previews), with weekend box-office revenue of around 13.7 million euros (1.32 million visitors).
The cinema release of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN – ON STRANGER TIDES also marked a new 3D-screen record in Germany: the film opened nationwide in cinemas on Thursday on a total of 1,309 screens, 889 of them in 3D.
Worldwide, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN – ON STRANGER TIDES earned around 346.4 million US dollars over its opening weekend, 256.3 million of that outside the USA, marking the best international opening weekend for a film of all time.
With current worldwide box-office revenue of more than 3 billion dollars, the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films are among the most successful series in film history. Like the three previous films, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN – ON STRANGER TIDES is an irresistible mixture of action and adventure, fun and spectacle, and for the first time in Disney Digital 3D! Successful producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Oscar®-nominated director Rob Marshall (CHICAGO) bring Johnny Depp back to the big screen in his cult role as Jack Sparrow. Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa and newcomer Penélope Cruz as the Caribbean’s most beautiful whirlwind, as well as the two much-discussed newcomers Sam Claflin as a brave missionary and the enchanting Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid, are also “on board” and provide further complications in the dangerous search for the Fountain of Youth.
