This announcement represents a major step for Sony, because until now Sony has not integrated the recording capability of these two codecs into either its high-end or low-end cameras. The introduction of the ProRes and DNxHD codecs should make the production workflow easier.

It is not yet known which ProRes and DNxHD variants will be supported or how much the upgrade will cost. Because it is a hardware upgrade, the cameras will probably have to be sent to Sony for an upgrade.

Sony will certainly publish more information about this at NAB, which takes place in Las Vegas from April 5 to 10.
