In nuce: In two Twitter posts, Daniel Martínez Lara and Antonio Vazquez, both tool developers at Blender, provide interesting insights into a new add-on for Blender with which you can create stop-motion animations. The add-on is called Claymation. It is currently still under development and was previously known as KeyMesh.
What can the Claymation add-on do? It allows you to use a 3D object as the basis for different versions of the mesh – always on a frame-by-frame basis, and with the help of Blender’s sculpting and deformation tools. The resulting workflow will be based on the classic stop trick that film fans know from Ray Harryhausen’s adventure films (“Clash of the Titans”, “The Valley of Gwangi”, “Jason and the Argonauts” and others).
What are Lara and Vazquez responsible for? Both developers were previously involved in the Grease Pencil team – Blender’s toolset for 2D animation.
New features: According to Daniel’s Twitter post, one of the new features he and Antonioya are working on is that you will be able to create Clas (clay) from Grease Pencil objects.
More info: A release date has not yet been announced. It is also not yet known whether the add-on will be chargeable. If you want to keep up to date with the development of Claymation for Blender, follow Daniel Martínez Lara and Antonio Vazquez on Twitter.
