In nuce: Nvidia has now made MDL (Material Definition Language) available as open source. As part of this, MDL Distiller and GLSL Backend will also be released open source. MDL ensures that real-world materials are displayed correctly across all applications. MDL is supported by Substance 3D Designer, Substance 3D Painter, V-Ray and Unreal Engine – and also works with Nvidia’s Omniverse. MDL Distiller helps to simplify MDL materials. GLSL Backend provides support for the OpenGL Shading Language. The move to open source was announced at Siggraph 2022.
