Sony presents its new FX30 camera

The latest device in the Cinema Line product range is a 4K Super 35 camera – at a comparatively affordable purchase price. A product news item.

In nuce: Sony has added the FX30 4K Super 35 camera to its Cinema Line product range. According to the manufacturer, the camera is aimed at aspiring filmmakers with a manageable budget. Sony is also announcing two new CFexpress Type A memory cards – the CEA-G320T and CEA-G640T models. According to the manufacturer, both cards offer large storage capacity on the one hand and high read and write speeds on the other.

Below are some of the most important technical specifications of the FX30:

  • The FX30 offers many of the professional features of the Cinema Line – including: Dual Base ISO, Log Shooting Modes and Custom LUTs (Look-Up Tables)
  • Sensor power: back-illuminated 20.1 megapixel APS-C Exmor R CMOS sensor (Super 35 format) with Dual Base ISO (800/2500), offering high sensitivity, low noise and a dynamic range of 14 stops.
  • High-quality motion picture recording: The FX30 can record 4K Super 35 movies (16:9) by oversampling 6K at up to 60 fps. The ILME-FX30 also records video at high frame rates, including 4K 120 fps and Full HD at 240 fps. Both 16:9 recording modes support 10-bit 4:2:2,
  • 4K 16-bit RAW images2 can be output to an external recorder3 via an HDMI Type-A connection.
  • Several log recording modes are supported: Cine El, Cine El Quick and Flexible ISO modes for recording with the S-Log3 gamma curve, which offers more flexibility in colour correction. All three modes allow video recording while monitoring with a suitable LUT to preview the final image.
