The Foundry releases Mari 6.0!

The software for drawing 3D textures has been released in version 6.0 and Charli Holt, Product Manager for Mari, is proud of the many USD-related improvements.

In nuce: The software developer The Foundry has released Mari 6.0 (a software for drawing 3D textures). This was announced in a press release yesterday. In the same press release, Charli Holt, Product Manager for Mari at The Foundry, says that Mari 5.0 was already working on making USD workflows accessible to smaller production studios. Charli continues: “I’m very pleased that Mari 6.0 has many USD updates in store.” Mari 6.0 improves workflows as well as adding two new USD exports and Python upgrades.

In toto: The following is a quick run-through of the most important new functions – in written and video form.

Preview Your Asset’s Final Look Faster With the USD Look Exporter | Mari Tutorial

USD MultiShader Export | What’s New in Mari 6.0

  • Two new USD exports: Thanks to these, texturing pipelines should become USD-capable. The USD Look Exporter makes it possible to export a single USD look file containing all relevant shader information. This should eliminate the need to set up USD looks in Katana or similar applications. According to the press release, this should bring look development and lighting together at an earlier point in the pipeline. Artists can also use Mari’s selection tools to add materials to the desired USD face set-based positions.

Roller Brush Tool | What’s New in Mari 6.0

Mari’s Roller Brush I Create Seams, Stitches and More by Rolling Images Along a Curve

  • Roller Brush: This new drawing function enables artists to paint a tileable image. Thanks to the roller brush, it should be possible to work out finer details without having to execute every stroke manually. Generating seams on items of clothing, for example, should be easier. This should result in greater efficiency.
  • Execute Python script actions – via Python snippets as shelf items: It is no longer necessary for artists to install Python scripts in the script path. One result of this should be that the exchange of scripts is more straightforward.

Teleport Nodes I What’s New in Mari 6.0

Tidy Up Your Node Graph and Reuse Elements with the Teleport Node | Mari Tutorial

  • Teleport node (Teleport Node): This is a two-part node consisting of a broadcaster and a receiver. The teleport node establishes hidden connections within the nodegraph. Simplified handling of the nodegraph and its navigation should be a benefit for artists.
