Autodesk has announced the acquisition of key intellectual property rights and the development team of Golaem, a leading provider of crowd simulation solutions. This move is aimed at further strengthening and expanding Autodesk’s position in crowd simulation and character animation.
Acquisition of Golaem by Autodesk
The acquisition includes key intellectual property (IP) and the core Golaem team. Golaem is known for its advanced crowd simulation solutions used in numerous major film and television productions. Through this acquisition, Autodesk aims to expand its expertise in character animation and crowd simulation to better meet the needs of modern VFX productions.
Software details
Golaem offers a range of tools that can be seamlessly integrated into Autodesk Maya. These tools support users in creating realistic crowd movements and complex character behaviours. The latest version of Golaem, Golaem 9, brings significant improvements and new features, such as support for Unreal Engine, which greatly enhances real-time visualisation. Golaem also enables collaboration with other animation software via formats such as FBX and Alembic.
Technical specifications and file formats
The integration of Golaem into Autodesk products allows the use of various file formats. Supported formats include
- FBX: A frequently used format for the exchange of 3D data between different software applications.
- Alembic: A format for the exchange of 3D computer animation and simulation data.
- USD: Universal Scene Description, a format developed for the collaboration and exchange of 3D assets.
Prices and licence models
Golaem was previously available as a stand-alone licence, either as a rental licence or a permanent licence. Following its integration into the Autodesk portfolio, new licence models and pricing packages are likely to be announced, which could include both Golaem and other Autodesk products. Up-to-date pricing information and licence details should be requested directly from Autodesk – as yet we know nothing.
