Blender 4.3 Beta Released

Blender 4.3 Beta is live, introducing the third-gen Grease Pencil, Eevee Light Linking, and Asset Browser updates. Available for testing until November 6.

Blender has launched the Beta version of 4.3, packed with features aimed at enhancing workflows for artists across digital production. With the final release scheduled for November 12, 2024, users can now test the software and report bugs before the official rollout.

Grease Pencil v3 stands out as a highlight. This complete rewrite now includes Layer Groups and Geometry Nodes integration, offering improved organization and new creative possibilities. However, it’s important to note that once files are saved in Blender 4.3, they won’t be backward-compatible with older versions. Artists are advised to back up projects before making the switch.

Blender 4.3 also brings advancements to EEVEE, adding Light Linking and Multi-pass Compositing. Light Linking allows specific control over which objects in a scene receive light, defying physical lighting rules. This feature, alongside the multi-pass setup in the 3D viewport, is ideal for those who prefer artistic flexibility.

A noteworthy change comes to the Brush System. Brushes are now treated as assets, making them reusable across multiple projects. This, combined with a community-driven brush library, speeds up workflows in sculpting, painting, and Grease Pencil creation. A significant rewrite of brush evaluation also promises better performance, particularly in viewport interactions.

Testing and feedback are encouraged during the Beta phase. Blender’s development team is keen on improving stability, so all features, especially the new Grease Pencil tools and Eevee updates, should be thoroughly vetted before applying them to production work.

Blender remains free to download, but users can support its development by contributing to the Blender Foundation’s Development Fund.
