FilmLight REMOTE: Next-Generation Remote Color Grading

FilmLight introduces a new remote grading solution with JPEG-XS, NICE DCV, and full control surface integration.

FilmLight has launched FilmLight REMOTE, a new solution for high-quality, low-latency remote color grading. Designed for Baselight and Daylight systems, REMOTE enables professional post-production facilities and colorists to work off-premise without compromising on monitoring accuracy or grading performance.

Optimized Remote Workflow with Minimal Latency

Traditional remote desktop solutions fail to deliver the responsiveness required for color grading. FilmLight REMOTE overcomes this by using Nice Dcv for UI control and an SRT-based JPEG-XS video stream to maintain real-time interaction and supporting multiple 4K UI monitors.

FilmLight REMOTE fully integrates a FilmLight control surface, UI monitors, mouse, and keyboard with professional SDI monitoring over the internet. Baselight or Daylight systems can operate via HP Anyware or Amazon DCV, while an SRT video connection ensures high-quality image transmission (supporting JPEG-XS and H265). (We have seen the Beta at Amazon’s booth at IBC, and it really works – even if you have trade-fair-connections!) The FilmLight desk service allows remote operation of the Slate, Blackboard Classic, and Blackboard 2 control panels.

JPEG-XS for High-Fidelity Streaming

JPEG-XS compression enables near-lossless image quality with latency measured in individual lines rather than frames. FilmLight REMOTE supports 4:2:2 10-bit, 4:4:4 10-bit, and 4:4:4 12-bit encoding at compression ratios between 2:1 and 12:1. This maintains precise color integrity while reducing GPU overhead.

Hardware and System Requirements

FilmLight REMOTE requires Baselight or Daylight version 6 or later. Compatible setups include:

  • Linux workstations with NVIDIA Quadro GPUs and SDI output via AJA Kona 4/5 or Blackmagic Design hardware. (No physical SDI encode hardware required for the Baselight or Daylight system)
  • Pre-configured FilmLight REMOTE servers, available as a 1U HP ZCentral 4R or HP Z2 Mini with AJA T-TAP Pro.
  • Mac systems, supporting HEVC or H.264 streaming but lacking SDI output.

REMOTE supports off-premise deployment, allowing facilities to run Baselight or Daylight in a data center or cloud environment. A thin-client system can stream the UI while handling control surfaces, with the video stream received via the FilmLight REMOTE server, capable of managing up to four UltraHD video streams and outputting to SDI for existing infrastructure.
