A new tool from Ehsan Kiani hits the ArtStation Marketplace, designed to let Substance 3D Painter users add realistic medical effects to skin textures. The tool is called MedTool and runs as a skin material generator inside Substance 3D Painter.
Once the desired bandage has been dialled in, the results can be exported directly from Substance 3D Painter, using the usual texture export workflows.
Works in Ink, Not Blood
MedTool continues a trend of extending Substance 3D Painter beyond general-purpose materials. As we covered in our previous article “Mastering Ink in Substance 3D Painter” (Also by Kiani!) Painter’s generator system is becoming a flexible platform for specialised texturing workflows. With MedTool, that flexibility now covers anatomical detailing, whether for horror, trauma sim, or straight-up skin study.

Requirements, Pricing, and Compatibility
MedTool is compatible with Adobe Substance 3D Painter. As it uses Painter’s built-in generator system, no additional plugins are required. The toolset is available here for 8€ in the Standard License, and a extended Studio License is 110€. Though, we shudder to think which studios would use that everyday!
Stability First, Then Surgery
As always, especially those promising to do a lot with a single shader, stability testing is advised. Artists should check for compatibility with workflows, export consistency across rendering engines, and real-world performance inside their own pipeline before deploying the tool in client-facing productions. Because the only thing worse than a procedural open wound is a non-deterministic export crash.
