Anyone who wants to invest around 18,000 dollars at Christmas can preorder now and soon watch their films in 4K resolution.
The size of each pixel was reduced from 7μm to 4μm, as was the space between each individual pixel. According to Sony, the VPL-VW1000ES projector offers a 4096×2160 resolution, in other words home cinema at four times Full HD with enormous image quality. Since film material at this resolution has so far been rare, the projector is also intended to upscale lower-quality source material to 4K on request.
According to Sony, the projector’s brightness is 2,000 ANSI lumens and its contrast ratio is 1,000,000:1. In addition to 2D projection, a stereoscopic 3D mode is intended to be selectable without changing the lens. The disadvantage is that anyone who wants to see true 4K resolution at home also has to invest another, not insignificant, sum of money in purchasing a corresponding player.
