Photon tracing for caustics
OTOY previewed OctaneRender 2022.1 with a new photon-tracing kernel designed to reduce noise in caustic effects. The company claimed rendering could be up to 1,000 times faster than the previous approach, including at low sample counts. The implementation combined GPU photon mapping with path guiding; the performance figure remained a vendor claim.
CUDA support was also highlighted for the GPU renderer. Artists should benchmark the kernel on representative scenes and verify current GPU and driver requirements before production use.
