Flight Simulator | Workshop Report Wednesday

Aeroplanes in your stomach – and on the (virtual) runway? Alessandro Cucinotta guides you to where “Microsoft Flight Simulator X” and “Reallusion” tools provide lift!

In nuce: In this detailed workshop report, published by our friendly colleagues at 80 Level, Alessandro Cucinotta, founder of “Simultech”, has his say: Alessandro talks about how he develops flight simulations – and why iClone, Character Creator and ActorCore are his tools of choice.

Who is Alessandro Cucinotta? Aviation has always been Alessandro’s passion. Born in Italy and now living in Switzerland, he worked for a service provider in the IMB Group after studying computer science. Alessandro was able to professionalise his passion: He created the virtual cockpit of an F-18 for an extension of “Microsoft Flight Simulator X”. When he moved to Tuscany in 2016, Alessandro founded the company “Simultech”, which specialises in add-ons for flight simulators.

What can you expect in the workshop report? Alessandro explains what it means to develop add-ons for flight simulators. One of the first steps is to visit the real airport to take photos – dozens and dozens of them. The next step is to take photogrammetric images. Back in the office, the photos taken are first polished with Photoshop, then a 3D terrain is created on the basis of them. By the way: “Simultech” only uses “Substance 3D Painter” for the PBR textures. For the virtual airport staff, Alessandro and his colleagues first use “ActorCore”, then the “Character Creator”, before exporting the models to “iClone” – all tools from Reallusion.

Overview: The workshop report is divided into the following sections: “Introduction”, “Add-On Development for Flight Simulators”, “Simultech”, “Developing an Add-On”, “Using Reallusion Tools” and “ActorCore”.

You can visit Alessandro Cucinotta on Instagramas well as “Simultech” on the corresponding company homepage. The two videos below show you how “Simultech” gets aeronautics on track in the flight simulator. Why don’t you take a flight?
