Ghostbusters: Afterlife | VFX Breakdown

The texture artists at MPC age Ghostbusters veteran Dr Egon Spengler – thanks to a skin-thin skin maps library. Mucousy feelings on Ghostbusters Day?

In nuce: For the retro sequel “Ghostbusters: Legacy” (originally: “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”), the VFX artists at MPC (Moving Picture Company) were tasked with resurrecting the actor Harold Ramis (who played veteran Ghostbuster Dr Egon Spengler), who died in 2014 – with the help of the first two Ghostbuster films, photos of the actor, concept art and skin maps. To celebrate this year’s Ghosbusters Day, which has been celebrated by ectoplasm fangirls and boys worldwide since 2016, MPC released the VFX breakdown below.

Old (hairstyle) moth: Even the very old ghost hunter with a penchant for mushroom (infestation) kept his hair quiff

It wasa particular challenge for MPC to make Harold Ramis age credibly, as the Second City veteran has not only been dead for over half a decade, but Ramis last played the eccentric ghost hunter Egon Spengler in 1989, over 30 years ago. Fortunately, MPC’s texture artists had an extensive in-house library at their disposal – stocked with numerous skin maps.
