glTF 2.0 now internationally standardised!

ISO/IEC accepts Khronos Group’s file format as the format standard for 3D assets! Maturity test for the JPEG format for CG artists?

In nuce: The Khronos Group launched glTF in 2013. The aim of the initiative was to create a format standard for 3D assets with glTF, comparable to JPEG in image processing, for example. Anyone who has followed the development: There is news! The Khronos Group has published its licence-free glTF -2.0 specifications as an ISO/IEC 12113:2022 international standard. This was recently announced by the Khronos Group. According to Khronos Group, the implementation of glTF 2.0 through the ISO/IECJTC 1 Publicly Available Specification Submission Process has thus been successfully completed – which should further consolidate the worldwide recognition of glTF.

Further information: Khronos Group vows to continue developing glTF in the future. Neil Trevett, Khronos President, says the ISO/IEC standard is recognised globally and, as Neil describes it, often provides the technical basis for procurements of IT-related goods and services. Furthermore, Neil points out that Khronos intends – also in the future – to transfer those Khronos specifications to international standardisation that are already in widespread use.
