Free e-book on Unity published!

What are the most important toolsets in Unity – and how do they work? The 92-page reference book provides the answers.

In nuce: Unity has published the free e-book Unity for Technical Artists: Key Toolsets and Workflows. The 92-page e-book provides an overview for artists who want to familiarise themselves with the key functions of the game engine. Our colleague Jim Thaker from cgchannel.com has read through the book – and finds that it summarises the most important toolsets required to create 3D games. However, there is also a chapter that deals with the development of 2D games. Overall, the book only touches on the respective toolsets, but links to further sources. The e-book is based on Unity 2021 LTS and was created in collaboration with the Stockhold Demo Team, which is responsible for visually impressive Unity short films (see Unity blog post from 25 May 2018).

In toto: In his message, Jim Thaker provides an overview of the topics covered in the e-book. Below is the content of the book in bullet points:

  • World Building is explained. The ProBuilder and Polybrush tools are also covered. ProBuilder is a hybrid of 3D modeller and level designer. With Polybrush , artists mix textures and colours directly in the editor – and model meshes or distribute objects.
  • A complete chapter is dedicated to Unity’s Universal Render Pipeline (which is suitable for both mobile games and more complex PC and console games).
  • Longer chapters deal with shading, lighting, animation, visual effects and cutting cutscenes.
  • Shorter chapters sometimes deal with scripting and performance debugging.

Just the day before yesterday, on 17 October, Digital Producution presented another free e-book: Nanite for Educators and Students. The 21-page slim e-book provides an overview of how Nanites work and how they influence game development – and how they make it possible to calculate complex geometries faster in real time.
