Turning cities into racing tracks with photogrammetry?

Photogrammetry tool Reality Capture, GoPro footage and drone footage: These are the three ingredients with which a developer has transformed an entire city into a racing track for the game Assetto Corsa. Start your engines!

In nuce: In the racing game Assetto Corsa from Italian game developer Kunos Simulazioni , speed fetishists race around the track in luxury vehicles such as the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. A developer, known under the pseudonym ISavic, has published a video in which a vehicle drives through a city from the cockpit perspective – within the game Assetto Corsa. The highlight: ISavic’s track was created using the photogrammetry tool Reality Capture.

Assetto Corsa – Photogrammetry track modding experiment

In toto: ISavic’s project began almost a year ago when he transformed an entire city into a drivable racetrack. According to ISavic, the racetrack was created almost exclusively with the help of reality capture, GoPro footage and drone recordings. Only individual assets, such as bridge railings or lampposts, were subsequently created in Blender. ISavic adds that the result is not perfect and still needs some fine-tuning, but can be used as a level for Assetto Corsa. If you want to follow Isavic’s example, you can watch the tutorial videos (also linked here) in which the developer explains how he created the roadway.
