A working group set up specifically for the purpose is to develop and control OpenGL further. The transfer of the specifications to the Khronos Group is to be completed with the third quarter of 2006. Its more than 100 members want to advance support for a wide range of platforms from the mobile sector through to high-end formats.

The exact goals are set by the so-called “Promoting Members” such as ATI, Intel, Motorola, Nokia, Nvidia, SGI, Sony and Sun, while the “Contributing Members” (which include almost every important company in the field of digital media) implement them. Apple, Dell and Google, among others, joined the Khronos Group as of July 31.

The takeover does not come as a surprise because the Khronos Group and the Open GL Architecture Review Board have already collaborated on coordinating the standards “OpenGL”, “OpenGL ES”, “OpenML”, “COLLADA” and “OpenGL SC”. A common roadmap for all standards is intended to bring greater platform independence (EGL standard) and reduce development and documentation effort.
