“The artists tool of choice…” – Will Harris ( product manager)
Flame is entering a new round at NAB 2018. With Flame 2019, artists for colour grading should stay in this programme instead of switching to Flame’s sister Lustre. Although Lustre is not to be cancelled out by this update, it sounds as if the latest updates will at least partially lead to this. Nevertheless, Lustre is still recommended by Autodesk.
New look for Flame effects
The most important feature in Flame 2019 is the new Effects tab with the intention of creating a creative, iterative environment. It includes a storyboard view, controls for active tools and of course the image itself. The tab is defined by the Image Node, allowing users to update effects in real time.
Matchbox based master grade tool
The Matchbox Shader System also provides a new master grade tool with the update. This enables a non-linear workflow for grading that works in video, linear and log mode.
To push grading work even further, Flame’s Waveform will now also support HDR and – if correctly understood – Wide Colour Gamut (WCG).
Creative FX
There is also a new selection of tools for Look Dev Work. These include A2 Beauty and Washer to improve beauty clean-ups, especially for skin. There is also a self-explanatory PhysicalGlare and a new Bokeh effect.
If you would like to find out more about beauty retouching, you can read more about it in our 18/01 issue or find the article HERE.
In addition, a generally improved handling of the Node Graphs has been announced, which is expressed, among other things, by context-dependent menus.
An exact price has not yet been set for the latest version.
