In nuce: At Eidos-Montreal and Eidos-Sherbrooke, full-time employees are happy to work 32 hours a week. But what can Eidos-Sherbrooke do – apart from a four-day week? Plugins, for example! Eidos employee Thibault Lambert has released a new version of his free plugin for Unreal Engine 5 , which allows users to read and edit OpenVDB and NanoVFB files. The current release is version 0.5, which now also supports displacements in the volume material. The plugin currently only works with the Windows operating system.

Further information about the plugin: Thibault Lambert, Lead Graphics Programmer at Eidos-Sherbrooke, developed the plugin. Thibault announced the original release of his plugin via Twitter. According to CG Channel, the plugin enables game developers to import VDB files into the Unreal Engine – for example from EmberGen. For VFXers, the plugin allows them to use Unreal Engine as a rendering alternative for OpenVDB files. The plugin supports both static VDB files and animated VDB sequences. The plugin connects to Unreal’s sequencer and the Niagara toolset – making it possible to render volumetric effects (e.g. explosions, smoke, clouds).
