In nuce: Industrial Light & Magic has released an eight-minute video that introduces the visual effects of the Disney Plus series to fangirls and fangirls interested in the origin story of the Star Wars episodic The Book of Boba Fett. Some of the space beasts, including the rough-and-tumble Wookie Black Krrsantan or the bounty hunter Cad Bane, were created with the help of practical effects – i.e. with spit, glue and complex puppet technology. But that’s not all: stop-motion was even used for the spider-like androids from the series. For the scenes with the Rancor, an animatronic was built on which actors could saddle up in real life.
Fun and dolls aside: the makers used an LED volume stage for the series’ environments. The use of deepfake technology in the series, which helped to resurrect a young Luke Skywalker, caused a surprise effect in the industry. Around eighty shots were created in the process, showing Mark Hamill in his parade role as the Jedi knight – smoothed out as if it were 1977. To further advance developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence, Lucasfilm recently hiredYouTuber Shamook , who caused a sensation with his amazing deepfakes. Incidentally, the largest digital set created for The Book of Boba Fet is the Mos Espa spaceport settlement on Tatooine.
