What can Adobe’s Substance 3D Sampler 3.4 do?

The king function is: the SBSAR files. Version 3.4 of the 2D-to-3D software is also designed to make working on creative projects more efficient and easier.

In nuce: Adobe has released version 3.4 of its Substance 3D Sampler – the software that allows 2D images to be transferred into a 3D environment. According to the manufacturer, the main improvements include improved materials and more efficient & simpler work.

New functions: Perhaps the most interesting new feature is the SBSAR files of materials – which are compared to a container containing all the information about a material’s appearance (including metadata and physical properties).

  • Exporting parametric assets: to popular DCC tools such as Substance 3D Painter, Blender, Unreal Engine or Photoshop (prerequisite: support for SBSAR)
  • Editing parametric materials: the user decides within which software. This should eliminate tedious back and forth between Sampler and other DCC tools
  • Metadata: Users can now add materials – and also: enter the physical properties of a material
  • New Python API: this allows users to create their own plugins and scripts
