In nuce: Lead game artist Nikola Damjanov has publicised a new approach to creating 3D materials via his Artstation account. The approach is based on Houdini and Substance 3D Sampler. The aim of Nikola’s approach is to make the creation of materials more efficient. Nikola cites the creation of geometries and height maps in Houdini, the scanning of objects and their surfaces – and artificial intelligence as the starting point – as the three most important cornerstones of his method.
In toto: Nikola’s Artstation post has been honoured with over 800 likes to date, and users have been consistently positive about Nikola’s method in the comments column. For example, Jasmine Wu, 3D Environment Artist at Wicked Realm Games, wrote: “Would love to see the tutorial for this!”, to which Nikola replied: “Thank you Jasmine! No promises, but I’ll try to make something.” So it remains to be seen whether Nikola will get round to providing a tutorial. Nikola Damjanov has been working at Nordeus – a developer of mobile games, where he holds the position of Lead Game Artist – for over ten years. Games developer Wicked Realm Games, where Jasmine Wu works, is part of the free-to-play developer Tilting Point. Wicked Realm Games’ most important game to date is the strategy RPG Star Trek Timelines.
