according to the organisers, 420 productions from 42 nations and five continents have applied for this year’s third “International Video Journalism Award”. The award will be presented on Saturday evening as part of the three-day international VJ festival (27 to 29 October 2006) at the Babylon cinema in Berlin.
The festival is a competition for documentary films, reports and television programmes in which direction, camera, sound, editing and text are all in the hands of a video journalist (VJ). The event is sponsored by Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg.
The participating films range from “On the Road in the Palestinian Territories”, “Once Again Abu Grahib”, “Women’s Football in Iran”, “Gut Shot – Emergency Doctor in Cape Town”, “Dying Beautifully – Paths to the Afterlife” to “The Sauna Village” and “And in the Evening Comes Karl Moik”. In addition to public screenings, visitors can also look forward to discussions and workshops with video journalists, programme makers and station managers from Europe and the USA. Web users can vote for the winner of the Audience Award at http://www.videomission.com.
Authentically told stories, documentary character and special intensity are the hallmarks of a video reportage. VJs were long regarded as pioneers of the digital revolution. In the meantime, authors who act as cameraman, editor and copywriter in one person have become an established force in the film and television world. “The digital revolution has opened up new forms of creation and distribution for journalism,” explains Medienboard Managing Director Petra Müller. “As a news capital and pioneer of digitalisation, Berlin is very happy to host the VJs, the new generation of newsmakers.”
The VJ Festival is presented by DW-TV Berlin, Hessischer Rundfunk, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, videomission, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Schweizer Fernsehen. Support comes from Bayerischer Rundfunk, Radio Bremen, Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk, ZFP Hannover, the Thuringian State Chancellery as well as Panasonic and Ambient Recording.
