In nuce: Maxon has released the latest version of Cinema 4D – it’s called Cinema 4D 2023.1, according to a release note dated 9 November and the associated changelog. The most important new features are the new simulation tool called Pyro, support for NanoVDB and an improved Redshift workflow.
In toto: The most important functions that have been added in the course of Cinema 4D 2023.1 are summarised below. For a complete list, please refer to the release note and the change log .
- Pyro: This new function can be used to simulate fire, smoke and explosions. According to cgchannel.com, the new Pyro feature is designed to be particularly user-friendly. The GPU-accelerated simulation also allows fire and smoke effects to interact with clothing and bodies (which, according to maxon.net, is part of Maxon’s Unified Simulation System. In German: Unified Simulation System).
- The display of the new pyro effects can be viewed via the viewport – which also supports NanoVDB. With NanoVDB, Nvidia displays simplified OpenVDB data structures. Accordingly, completed simulations can be saved as VDB files. The background to this: As it says on developer.nvidia.com , OpenVDB is a data structure standard and toolset with which volumetric effects can be processed. Everything else you need to know about OpenVDB can be found at openvdb.org .
- Improvements for Redshift: The workflow with the Redshift renderer should now be smoother. This can be seen in the fact that a native Redshift camera has been introduced, which has its own setting options (e.g. various lenses, including fisheye or spherical and cylindrical display). Other new features designed to improve Redshift in Cinema 4D include support for animated textures, ramps, vertex colours and some colour correction nodes.
- Symmetry modelling has also been refined. This mainly concerns the global symmetry system – radial, planar and topological symmetries are now supported.
- USD workflow: According to cgchannel.com, C4D 2023.1 allows USD layers to be exported. Provided that C4D has been placed in a USD pipeline.
