TV-quality videos via the Internet:

Streaming technology from deuromedia enables broadband transmission in TV quality via the Internet. The Munich-based docutainment broadcaster Discovery Channel is showing this on its homepage during IFA 2001

The television may soon be a thing of the past. The PC becomes a broadband receiving station and the monitor becomes a television – technology from deuromedia brings films to the Internet. On the occasion of IFA, Discovery Channel is testing the possibilities of broadband technology in co-operation with deuromedia, one of the leading manufacturers of broadband transmission software.

With deuromedia’s technology, films can be shown in TV quality on the Internet. Discovery Channel is known for its high-quality documentaries on nature and wildlife, science and technology, travel and adventure as well as history and current affairs. In addition to the usual programme information, trailers of current programmes will be available in TV quality in a special section of the documentary channel’s homepage during the trade fair. All you need to watch these programmes is a DVB-S card and a connection to the Astra satellite. The deuromedia reception software “the viewer plug-in” is available for free download on the website.

“Our channel is not only concerned with innovative ideas and technologies in its programme. We also want to set new impulses in the media landscape. With this joint project, we want to explore the potential of television in the future,” says Dr Patrick Hörl, Managing Director of Discovery Channel, about the collaboration with deuromedia.

This application is made possible by deuromedia’s IP multicast platform. This consists of various tools that cover the entire value chain from sender to receiver. This makes sending large amounts of data via a broadband medium, such as a satellite connection, very simple and straightforward.

With “viewmotion”, the programme provider has a tool with which it can compile its data and prepare it for a targeted transmission (scheduling system). The data formats are irrelevant.

The platform works on an IP basis and is therefore open to any conceivable application. The HTML links generated by viewmotion allow the sent data to be accessed and retrieved via websites at the click of a mouse. The processing and presentation of the data on the recipient side is carried out by different applications from deuromedia, e.g. by “the viewer plug-in”, depending on the area of application.

A high-performance broadband network is required for the path to the receiver: in addition to the comprehensive satellite technology, deuromedia also supports any other broadband infrastructure such as TV cable or terrestrial networks with “viewmanage”, the software for the service provider. viewmanage takes the data from the content provider from the network operator and feeds it to the IP gateway. The service provider simply provides the required bandwidth and “viewmotion” takes care of the rest. intelligent bandwidth management allocates the incoming data to the available bandwidth and sends it to the predetermined recipients. The deuromedia system is therefore not only ideal for transporting multimedia and interactive TV content, but also for database and software updates as well as e-commerce applications and merchandise management systems.

“We want to show both consumers and content providers what is already possible today. We are delighted that such an attractive partner as Discovery Channel has agreed to discover the new age of digital multimedia services with us at IFA,” says Dieter Weber, Managing Director, deuromedia GmbH, on the background to the project.
