An update in Autodesk’s online documentation reveals some of the new features of 3ds Max 2022 Update 1.
Perhaps the most welcome feature update is an old acquaintance, as this function was briefly missing: the Symmtery modifier will soon have the option to adjust the Weld Threshold again. As a reminder: The Weld Threshold is used to merge vertices along a cutting plane. Whenever the default threshold is above or below a threshold value of 0.01.
Away from the old familiar, towards an innovation that will have to prove itself to users: Editable Poly and the Edit Poly Modifier receive two new, optional culling selection filters. Backface and Ignore Occluded allow the user to select the components that should be visible in the view (vertices, edges, polygons). This is intended to prevent the accidental selection of components that are not currently visible. Backface and Ignore Occluded thus replace the Ingore Backfacing Toggle.
The fact that vertex colours from multiple sources are now also supported when importing models with FBX provides more colourful design freedom than before. The legacy noise maps, which have been improved with better multi-threading, fall into the “sounds interesting, but has to prove itself in practice” category. Users can also look forward to the vertex paint, which has been improved by the fact that the selection of sub-object components can be passed on to the vertex paint modifier via the modifier stack with 2022 Update 1. Many of the other features announced primarily relate to an improvement in general performance.
The list of online documentation is not definitive. It is to be expected that further features will be added with the release of 3ds Max 2022 Update 1.
