In nuce: Disney releases its USD data collection of the fictional South Pacific island of Motunui (from the animated film Moana).
For whom is the USD data collection worthwhile? According to the description, Motunui Island represents many of the challenges faced by environment artists today – including a high number of geometries created via instancing, as well as complex volumetric lighting and motion blur.
What is included in the USD data collection? The data collection consists of 20 components, including meshes, which are made up of more than 90 million triangles and squares and 5 million curves – also included are: 28 million foliage, rubble and stone variants. However, the data collections that you have to download weigh relatively heavily on your hard drive: the basic package weighs in at 93 gigabytes unpacked, and the data package that you need to animate the entire shot (of the island), for example, weighs a whopping 131 gigabytes (again unpacked). So, if necessary, free up some space on your hard drive.
Where does Motunui Island come from? Fans of the animated film Moana (German title: Vaiana – Das Paradies hat einen Haken) will be familiar with the island, as it was one of the main locations in the Disney film. If you need a reminder of what kind of film Moana is and why it’s worth seeing, click back to 14.06.2016 , because that’s when the teaser trailer flexed its muscles (and clumsy chickens tripped over their own claws).
