World of Warcraft | Workshop Report Wednesday

If you want to decorate fantasy worlds with your art design, you should start up Autodesk Maya and Marmoset Toolbag 3 now!

In nuce: In this detailed workshop report, published by our friendly colleagues from 80 Level, Environment/Pro Artist Gloria Stamova talks about her project called “Revendreth Diorama” with Autodesk Maya and Marmoset Toolbag 3. Gloria’s project is based on the Revendreth fortress from World of Warcraft, which is characterised by a dark and creepy style.

Who is Gloria Stamova? As Gloria describes it, she took her first steps into the world of three-dimensional content creation at the age of 15 – the beginning of a fascination with 3D that has not waned to this day. First of all, Gloria used Autodesk Maya to create the house of her dreams, but once she had familiarised herself with the fantastic worlds of World of Warcraft, one thing was certain: the art direction of the role-playing game would not let go of Gloria any time soon.

From self-study to a decent degree: Gloria later transferred her passion for the popular MMO into her student life, graduating from the University of South Wales in 2018 with a Bachelor’s degree in Game Art. During her studies, Gloria initially focussed on portraying realistic-looking characters, but after failing to warm to studying anatomy, she switched to environment art, which was just the right change of direction for Gloria. Since then, Gloria has focussed her portfolio on the art style of World of Warcraft. One of the artists who particularly inspired Gloria is the environment/prop artist Asleigh Warner (see also on Artstation and Twitter).

What can you expect in the workshop report? The workshop report is divided into the following steps: “Inspiration and Mood Boards”, “Modelling”, “Texturing”, “Lighting” and the final “Conclusion”.
