In nuce: Autodesk has announced the release of Maya Creative – the budget version of Autodesk Maya. Maya Creative will be made available via Autodesk Flex (Autodesk’s pay-as-you-go payment option, which is aimed at users who only occasionally access a product. Digital Production explained how Autodesk Flex works on 15.09.2021).
The functional scope of Maya Creative includes the areas of animation, rigging, modelling, rendering – and interactive tutorials. Below are the listed functions from the animation area. All other functions can be accessed by interested users with the product video below. A comparison table helps to get an idea of the scope of Maya Creative versus the regular Maya version (e.g. Maya Creative does not support: Linxus operating system, support for Unreal Live Link, third-party plugins, etc.).
- Cached Playback: This allows artists to recognise changes made to their animations – without having to resort to Playblast
- Time Editor: Enables high-quality animation edits, according to Autodesk – with the help of an easy-to-use clip-based editor
- Graphic Editor: Create, view and adjust animation curves using a graphical representation of motion sequences
- Ghosting Editor: Allows you to visualise the movement and positioning of objects along a timeline
- Blue Pencil Toolset: Draw 2D sketches directly into the viewport to plan motion sequences and animation paths
