On the occasion of NAB, Sony announced some figures on the sales success of its HD and HDV products. According to these, March 2005 was the best sales month Sony Professional had ever had. In the USA, the company intends to have sold more than 6,000 units of the HVR-Z1 HDV camcorder by NAB. In Europe, the figures are said to have been 3,500 Z1s and 1,000 HDV recorders. According to company figures, 6,000 XDCAM units have now been sold worldwide. For DVCAM, Sony speaks of 610,000 units sold worldwide.
Sony wants to generate 50 percent of its sales for 2005 with HD products. After the introduction of HDTV, Sony is now in the growth phase: The HDCAM products are a recognized standard and are now used in the US market not only by broadcasters or production companies, but are slowly finding their way into the Goverment and Business sectors as well. Thus, universities (for example, the Medical Center of New York University) and churches in the USA are now also using HDCAM.
