The GC Developers Conference, described as Europe’s largest game-development conference, closed with record attendance of more than 900 participants, compared with 650 in 2006. From 20 to 22 August, game-development specialists from more than 35 countries met in Leipzig ahead of the Games Convention. The final day included Tim Schafer’s first European talk, a panel on international gaming communities, and a Titan Quest postmortem.
International visitors represented 60 percent of attendees. The largest groups came from North America and the United Kingdom, with Eastern European developers also strongly represented.
Tim Schafer of Double Fine, whose credits include Psychonauts, Grim Fandango, and Full Throttle, discussed the challenges and opportunities of incorporating creativity into modern game design.
Brian Sullivan of Iron Lore presented the Titan Quest project review. Peter Larsen of Electronic Arts, Teut Weidemann of Online Entertainment, Thomas Jansen of Turtel Entertainment, and Frederic Descamps of X-Fire discussed community design, methods for supporting communities, and the role of fans in company growth.
