Riedel Connects Rugby World Cup Venues

Riedel links 12 Rugby World Cup stadiums with Artist 64 intercom matrices, TETRA radio networks and more than 3,000 handsets.

Riedel Communications supplied and installed the communications infrastructure for 12 stadiums in France and England during the 2007 Rugby World Cup. The deployment combined matrix intercom, partyline and digital trunked radio systems and occupied 24 Euro pallets weighing roughly 12 tonnes.

The tournament drew 2.4 million stadium visitors and a reported global television audience of four billion, placing substantial demands on the systems coordinating venue operations.

Artist intercom platform

Riedel based the venue intercom on its Artist digital matrix platform. Artist 64 managed signals from intercom panels and radio channels, providing push-button communication for the organizing committee, sports presentation managers and results services.

The company had previously deployed similar integrated systems at the Turin Winter Olympics and the FIFA World Cup in Germany.

TETRA radio networks

Ten digital trunked-radio networks were installed, each with four base radios. The organizing committee used between 15 and 20 talk groups at each stadium.

Approximately 250 to 300 Motorola MTH-800 radios operated per venue, with more than 3,000 digital TETRA handsets supplied across the tournament. The platform provided full-duplex communication, efficient use of frequencies and encrypted operation for event staff.
