Together with the Protestant Church in Germany (EKD), the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film will once again award a prize next year for the best German-language screenplay for an animated cinema film. The prize had a “good start” at the 2007 Festival of Animated Film with 33 submitted screenplays for animated feature films, the organisers state. The prizewinner was “Sing, Rabbit, Sing!” by Heike Sperling and Oliver Huzly.

“The aim of the prize is to promote German-language animated films with outstanding potential in the development phase and to improve the content quality of animated films”, explains Senior Church Councillor Udo Hahn, head of the Media and Journalism Department in the EKD Church Office. In addition, the screenplay prize is intended “to support the development of sophisticated topics as well as an ethical and social discourse in animated film”. The animation screenplay prize is aimed at feature-length animated film projects written in German. Screenplays of films that have already been completed are not eligible.

The German Animation Screenplay Prize 2008 will be awarded on May 5, 2008 as part of the 15th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film, with prize money of 5,000 euros. The prize sponsor is the Protestant Church in Germany. Complete screenplays or synopses with a ten-page excerpt from the screenplay can be submitted.

A high-calibre selection jury evaluates the submitted screenplays, nominates four screenplays for the final round and awards the German Animation Screenplay Prize from among them. As part of the award ceremony, a prominent actor or voice actor will present excerpts from the nominated screenplays.

As part of the screenplay prize, screenplay workshops with German and European screenwriters and experts take place in cooperation with MFG Film Funding Baden-Württemberg and the Heinrich Böll Foundation Baden-Württemberg. At the same time as the German Animation Screenplay Prize is awarded, the Stuttgart Festival of Animated Film and fmx are holding Animation Production Day (APD) with selected producers and financiers. The APD offers a good opportunity for screenwriters to make direct contact with potential producers.

The submission deadline for the animation screenplay prize is February 15, 2008.
