Sony Presents CineAlta 4K at Landshut Short Film Festival

A complete digital projection system using Sony CineAlta 4K technology was deployed for the first time at the ninth Landshut Short Film Festival from 6 to 9 March.

The installation, comprising an SRX-R110 projector and integrated Media Block, was used to screen digitally produced festival entries at the Alte Kaserne, one of the event’s four venues, and during the festival awards ceremony on Sunday evening. The entries were compressed in JPEG 2000 format and supplied as interoperable Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs).

During the media day on Saturday, 8 March, numerous interested visitors were also able to explore Sony’s digital-cinema technology. A demonstration screening consisted largely of native 4K material to showcase the full capabilities of digital cinema. Other current products for cinema and HD production were also demonstrated, including the compact Sony XDCAM EX1 solid-state camcorder, the new XDCAM HD 422 PDW-700 camera, and the F23 camera developed specifically for film production.

Like all Sony CineAlta 4K products, the system shown in Landshut was developed specifically for the demanding requirements of the digital-cinema era. Its 4K resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels meets the highest quality level of the digital-cinema specification formulated by the Hollywood studios and the resulting standards.

The Sony LMT-100 Media Block provides comprehensive digital-rights management, likewise compliant with Digital Cinema Initiatives specifications. Since their successful launch last year, Sony 4K systems have entered regular service at several cinemas in German-speaking countries, including locations in Münster, Munich, and Vienna. Sony and its partners intend to continue intensifying and advancing the introduction of CineAlta 4K technology.
