Gameforge, the largest independent provider of browser- and client-based online games, is the only German game developer to be named a winner of Red Herring 100 Europe 2008. Each year, the US magazine Red Herring uses the award to recognize the 100 best privately held technology companies in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Compiling a list of leading private-sector companies has become a Red Herring tradition intended to draw attention to emerging and innovative technology companies and entrepreneurs. Previous winners include Google, eBay and Skype.

We have achieved an enormous amount in just four years. More than 52 million people in 36 countries now play our online games. For the award, Red Herring’s editorial team evaluates several hundred privately held companies according to strict criteria. The assessment is based on a careful analysis of financial figures and qualitative corporate values such as business strategy, quality management, and investment in research and development.
