DICOM stands for Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine and is a worldwide open standard that ensures the exchange of digital images in medicine and thus interoperability between different medical applications. The complete solution consists of two components: CDs and DVDs are burned and duplicated by the MDR Publisher, a further development of Primera’s Disc Publisher XRP. The duplicator is controlled by the MDR Express software from the !
company NAI Tech Products.
The MDR Publisher can be connected very easily to a medical imaging device or integrated into an existing DICOM network. The device can be loaded with up to one hundred optical media and enables radiology and orthopaedic practices, as well as the corresponding departments in hospitals, to burn DICOM images directly onto CDs or DVDs in a single operation without manual intermediate steps. The method is also suitable for medical video recording on X-ray and ultrasound devices, as its quality is far superior to S-VHS. The software simultaneously places the DICOM viewer on the medium so that the image files can be viewed and, if necessary, edited on any PC. A further advantage of the solution is that the blank discs are printed fully automatically with the necessary patient and hospital or practice details, so that mix-ups are virtually ruled out in future. !
In the manufacturers’ view, patient CDs with self-adhesive labels could therefore cease to be permissible in the near future.
As Primera Technology and NAI Tech Products also report, their joint solution is significantly cheaper for image production than conventional methods. They say a CD can be produced at a fraction of the cost incurred by the still widespread production of film sheets. DTM Medical GmbH, based in Wiesbaden, is responsible for distribution in the Federal Republic of Germany.
