Imation Corp. (NYSE:IMN) remains the global provider of tape media under the Sun StorageTek brand for the new generation of Sun StorageTek tape drives. The new Sun StorageTek T9840D drives have been available since March 2008 and can write up to 75 GB of data to 9840 half-inch magnetic tape cartridges.

Technical details of Imation’s Sun StorageTek 9840 half-inch tape cartridge:
- Its internal tape path keeps the magnetic tape inside the cartridge at all times, improving data integrity and access speeds.
- The tape travels on an air cushion, virtually eliminating friction between the tape and its guides. This achieves the fastest search speeds of all current tape-storage systems.
- A mid-point dual-hub loading system starts searches from the middle of the tape, enabling faster access to stored data.

A preformatted servo pattern provides exact track guidance for precise read and write operations.

An aluminum base plate improves cartridge stability and enables accurate alignment between the read/write head and tape.
